A 10 Year Old Champion Destroys League of Legends – What Makes Varus So Strong in LoL?
More and more pro players are playing varus in the midlane. After Frederik “NoWay” Hinteregger shone with the pick on the botlane weeks ago, the champion is one of the insider tips of the League of Legends solo queue. It can be played in two different ways depending on what the opposing team looks like.
What makes Varus so strong? Varus has been played in the midlane from time to time and has often been one of the meta picks in the past. But the current one revolves mainly around the common magicians, such as Viktor, Thaliya, Sylas.
And this is where Varus comes into focus. He does insanely high damage with his Q and W combo. Here’s a clip of Cho’Gath dealing almost 5900 life in damage in a few seconds:
AP Varus manages to deal massive damage and completely destroy opponents through combinations with his W ability.
It is enough if the opponent has previously gotten 3 stacks of his W ability and these are activated by the other abilities. The main damage then comes from the combination of Q and W skills and is very painful for the opponent.

What do you have to consider when playing? Depending on the opponents, Varus can be played in different ways. There’s full AP varus, which builds on ability power. It focuses on the combination between the Q ability and the W ability stacks to kill the enemies from a distance.
The alternative is based on the additional damage, which deals more damage with each auto attack. You’ll be using attack speed a lot in this build, and you’ll need to pay special attention to how you position yourself on the map and move around in combat.

The right runes and items for your Varus build in LoL
The Full AP Varus:
- Your runes in the inspiration tree are then: First Strike > Magic Footwear > Future Market > Cosmic Insight
- In the second tree you can try your hand. However, bone armor and life source have proven themselves, so that you can withstand more and influence the lane
- The most important items are: Doran’s Blade > Nashor’s Tooth > Rift Shaper > Rabadon’s Deathcap
- The playstyle focuses on hitting your ultimate or getting 3 stacks on the opponent before piercing them with an arrow
The attack speed varus:
- For the attack speed build, the runes are: Deadly Speed > Triumph > Legend: Zeal > Mow Down
- In the second tree it is very important that you take the runes Cosmic Insight and Magic Footwear. This provides Varus with additional cooldown reduction and increased movement speed
- The main items consist of: Doran’s Blade > Infinity Shield Bow > Blade of the Ruined King > Guinsoo’s Rageblade
- In case the enemy team has a lot of ability damage, buy Wisdom’s End after the Shield Bow
- The important thing about this build is that you keep moving so you don’t get caught off guard

Who else is playing Varus? G2’s midlaner Rasmus “caPs” Borregaard Winther plays off-meta champions occasionally in solo queue. In his streams he plays champions like Shaco or Zac Midlane.
After NoWay Varus played midlane, caPs copied the pick and played it to success. It even got to the point where G2’s midlaner played the pick in the LEC and that pick helped his team win.
So far, Varus’ pick rate doesn’t promise too much. Varus’ win rate is currently 49.35% (via op.gg). With G2’s tactics released and twitch streamer NoWay showing the pick as a trendsetter, it only remains to be seen when the nerf to Varus will come, as some will Reddit Posts already suspect.
