According to a new insight on Steam, the developers at EA Motive are making a lot of effort for the new edition of the sci-fi horror classic Dead Space.

As is well known, a completely overhauled version of Dead Space will be released on January 27th, for which the PC system requirements were already published earlier this month, and now a new post from the developers on Steam explains what players can expect in terms of the graphical overhaul.

The declared goal: The remake version of Dead Space from the ground up, adding new content and contemporary additions, while still wanting to stay true to the original. This includes, among other things, modern hardware solutions and technical improvements. With the well-known Frostbite engine, “every animation, every texture, every effect, every enemy behavior […] newly created”.

Thanks to today’s computing power, you can “significantly improve” the lighting, which applies to both lights and shadows. In addition, the “system for dismembering […] really well done” and enriches the gameplay by making it feel more dynamic and strategic.

Dead Space Remake: It’s getting brutal

“When you start shooting, you see the skin and flesh being ripped off the enemy’s body,” said creative director Roman Campos-Oriola. “Then you see the bones underneath, which you can also cut through, just like the limbs. It looks amazing and players get direct feedback on the damage they’re dealing.”

Also, there’s a lot of work done with volumetric effects like fog and the effects it has on other elements like shadows, lights and game physics, which couldn’t be done before at this level. “We just want it to be visible that we haven’t just revised the graphics,” says Senior Producer Philippe Ducharme, “although that would have been great. But we also created new content, incorporated background knowledge and provided more depth , which has a positive effect on the gaming experience.” All of the developers’ comments on their remake can be found here in the Steam post.
