Grand Theft Auto 6: Rockstar Games has reportedly already spent 2 billion

Grand Theft Auto 6 (Action) von Rockstar Games

In the course of the big leaks to Grand Theft Auto 6, the authorities recently arrested a 17-year-old person. Alleged chats with exciting information have now been shared.

At least that’s according to a tweet from vx-underground. There they claim to have got hold of the hacker’s conversations before he was arrested. It gives the impression that he was apparently planning to sell access and data from Take 2 and Rockstar Games. He also claims that GTA 6 has been in the works since 2014 – and is said to have cost two billion US dollars to date.

GTA 6: Can the sum be correct?

An official statement from Rockstar is not yet available and it is doubtful whether one will follow. Of course, the hacker’s claim isn’t easily verified either, so it should be classified as a rumor. However, it cannot yet be said with certainty whether he might not have had access to the relevant documents that show such an immense sum.

In any case, it would be a huge leap up compared to the previous model. 2013 guessed for example, the International Business Times that the development of GTA 5 is said to have devoured about 265 million US dollars. And the even longer-developed Star Citizen recently broke the 500 million mark through crowdfunding for its creation. This makes it the most expensive unplayable game at the moment. If the two billion for GTA 6 are actually correct, that would easily put the crown on the project.

Due to the long development time and certainly enormous ambitions, the sum does not seem to be too far-fetched. At the same time, this would mean that it is still growing continuously, since GTA 6 will probably not be released until 2024 or 2025.
