New Crimson & Crimson Pokémon leaked and it might look pretty familiar to you

An artwork shows us the map of Pokémon Crimson and Crimson.

With Wiglett, a new Pokémon has appeared for the upcoming editions.

Again there is a new Pokémon for Crimson & Crimson and that is Wiglett. There is no German name yet, but in English, the Pokémon’s name is very similar to Diglett, in this country Digda. And not only that, the two Pokémon species also look very similar. However, Wiglett is said to be a completely separate Pokémon.

The Pokémon World Ecological Society clarifies

In a video captured at a Pokémon Company showcase, the fictional Pokémon World Ecological Society discusses with voices from around the world whether Wiglett is a distinct species of Pokémon.

The fictitious researchers initially point out that Wiglett and Digda have similar characteristics, but also note that their habitat, diet and general behavior are very different. So they are absolutely sure that Wiglett has absolutely nothing to do with Digda in terms of species.

The obvious similarities in the fictional world can be well explained with a term from real biology. There is what is called “convergent evolution”. It may sound complicated, but it is very easy to explain.

Convergent evolution is calledthat different species may have evolved similar characteristics without arising from a common ancestral species. A few simple examples would be the fins of both fish and whales, or the wings of birds and bats.

Regional variants are retained

Nevertheless, there will also be regional variations of already known Pokémon in crimson and purple. For example, the otherwise blue water and ground Pokémon Felino is brown in the new Paldea region and combines the Poison and Ground types. It remains unclear why the developers at Wiglett did not proceed in a similar way and made a variant of Digda out of it.

The two editions Pokémon Crimson and Crimson will be released on November 18, 2022 for the Nintendo Switch.

Are you looking forward to new Pokémon like Wiglett or do you prefer the regional variants?
