PlayStation gets criticism for loyalty program – Support should favor players at the highest level

PlayStation Stars, Sony’s new loyalty program, launched in Japan in September. But there is already criticism because some players are given preferential treatment by customer service.

What is this program? PlayStation Stars is a loyalty program for PS4 and PS5. All members have the opportunity to collect loyalty points, which they can then spend in a catalogue.

If you’re a PS Plus subscriber, you’ll also get points when you buy games from the PS Store. The program started in Asia at the end of September and is scheduled to follow in October in Europe and North America.

The program is divided into four stages. Members then have the opportunity to progress from level 1 to level 4 by collecting 128 trophies and purchasing at least four games from PlayStation Store. Completing campaigns and playing different games should also be rewarded.

Criticism of PlayStation Stars for preferential treatment

Why is there criticism? PlayStation Stars is currently available in Japan, and early gamers there have had negative comments about the system. Like the online magazine VideoGamesChronicle.com reported that PlayStation Stars members who have reached level 4 will be treated with increased priority in the chat order when contacting Sony Customer Service. This realization didn’t sit well with some players in Japan:

  • yossy_44 via Twitter: “I don’t think prioritizing customer support is a good idea. I bought a PS5 just for Final Fantasy 16 – is it okay for someone like that to be postponed?
  • yamatospirit via Twitter: “It can’t be that you get unequal support.”
  • koshifurinyodo via Twitter: “They say the more you play with it, the more you care about customer support, but the more you play with it, the less you care about customer support. Something’s not quite right there. Prefers beginners who are new to the game.”
