PS Plus: In October you can speed back to childhood with Hot Wheels

Hot Wheels Unleashed is one of the October 2022 PS Plus titles.

In October, Hot Wheels is part of PS Plus.

When I recommended Hot Wheels Unleashed to you in the GamePro review last year, you had an understandable reaction that went something like this: Looks like a fun arcade racer, but I’ll grab it sometime when it’s on sale .

The time has come, dear ones! In addition to “Super, Super Superhot” and the DC banger Injustice 2, Unleashed will be part of the PS Plus Essential lineup from October 4th and I think it’s the perfect game for the side to spend the weeks leading up to the strong release autumn for God of Was Ragnarök available on PS4 and PS5.

A wonderful nostalgia trip

The first thing that makes Hot Wheels amazing is to make us feel comfortable. After all, many of you will have chased the little toy cars over the orange tracks in your childhood.

But Unleashed doesn’t just send us on a short nostalgia trip. Developer Milestone (Bleifuss Fun) makes the little speedsters the star of the game. From the Bone Shaker to the green Rip Rod to the DeLorean from “Back to the Future”, the cars in the game just look damn cool, drive differently and it’s fun to collect the favorites from the former children’s room.

By the way, don’t be put off by the drift mechanics at the beginning. The important slides around corners take a bit of getting used to, but once you get the hang of it, the arcade fun pushes the accelerator harder and harder.

What might also confuse you: The selection of routes is still quite uniform, especially at the beginning of the game. That doesn’t necessarily matter if you drive 2-3 races every day, but if you play for three hours at a time, you’ll definitely notice it bothering you. But it should be said that there are still really cool and creative courses waiting for you later in the game.

Also for farmers and co-op gamers

What is no longer really in fashion these days, for whatever reason, is a well-implemented local Split screen mode. It’s in Unleashed and it’s also a lot of fun. You can also choose to play online multiplayer.

When you look at the orange-colored routes, memories of your childhood come up.

In addition, the hobbyists among you can let off steam in an extremely extensive route editor. Then the feeling from childhood comes back when you line up loop after loop to build the most spectacular track.

It really was a nice surprise that Hot Wheels made it into PS Plus. Spending 30-50 euros for an arcade racer is always something and I can understand anyone who is waiting for a real catch in this type of game.

But now there is no excuse not to at least take a look at the game. Because it’s worth it. Not only did Milestone understand exactly what makes the Hot Wheels feeling and put a lot of love into the design of the chic speedsters, Unleashed is also the perfect game for the side and especially for the weeks before the release autumn starts with its blockbusters.
