Karsten’s greeting from parental leave: 10th place in his top 10 best games ever
If you are reading these lines, I am doing the acclimatization in the nursery with the offspring. Alternatively, I hide behind the armchair while Fabi practices the art of self-sufficiency with spinach and katopü, bury highly explosive diaper mines in the garden or take part in secret pram races in the park with other fathers (just don’t tell Mom!). In short: I have two months of parental leave.
Since you shouldn’t break traditions you’ve grown fond of, I want to present you with a (hopefully) humorous book article every Friday in October and November, which you can use to end the evening or start the weekend. So I thought for a little while what I would like to write about for the next ten Fridays. wait, ten? Top 10? That fits! But what kind of ranking should it be?
Then it occurred to me how excited I was about Elden Ring this year. So excited that I made a mental note: The game definitely belongs in my personal top 10 best games of all time. But what exactly does my top 10 look like? After all, I’ve been playing for…oh my…about 35 years?! Oo The subsequent discussion process with myself was, as you can imagine, quite lengthy. But successful! Over the next few weeks you will find out which ten games made it into my top 10 and for what reasons – this week I’ll tell you my place with number 10. Tell me and the other readers in the comments which game it is from which reasons you ranked 10th!
Karsten’s 10th place: Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
I don’t remember exactly what I was doing in December 2003.’ But I still remember exactly what I was back then, namely a Star Wars fan, an RPG enthusiast and a gamer who really enjoyed the last Bioware title, Neverwinter Nights. So you could say that Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic was made for me.
At first, however, the great enthusiasm did not want to set in. Most Star Wars games I’ve played to date have been pure action titles. Take 2002’s Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast and September 2003’s Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy, which pretty much preheated the hard drive for KOTOR. In a direct comparison, the role-playing game’s fights that can be paused seemed quite unspectacular at first.
At the latest after escaping the Ender Spire, however, KotOR grabbed me. Because of the varied locations, the great staging and the well-written dialogues and characters. Plus all the choices I could make to move closer and closer to the light or dark side or stay in a gray area. It’s a shame that modern role-playing games rarely work with such moral systems that can be used to influence the outcome of quests or even the story.
A magical moment for eternity
Speaking of history, if you’re looking for a game that will lead you down completely the wrong track for hours, only to eventually unleash a story twist that leaves you with your jaw dropping and a big “WTF” over your head, then I can bring you today still recommend the almost 19-year-old Star Wars – Knights of the Old Republic.
I just have to think back to that particular moment in the game and I instantly get goosebumps all over again. At that time I sat in front of the PC for what felt like an eternity and just grinned to myself. I did not expect that. Not only does this scene culminate in one of the best stories in gaming history, it’s still one of my favorites to this day magical moments of my favorite hobby. So of course KotOR has to end up in my top 10 (and that’s why I keep my fingers crossed, that Embracer can serve us a worthy remake).
