FIFA 23: Heavy criticism also for the switch version

from Valentin Sattler
Also this year FIFA 23 comes on the switch only as “Legacy Edition”. As a result, there are no new gameplay mechanics, just updated licensed content.

FIFA 23, a new football game from EA, was released on Friday, and the shitstorm began on the same day. On release day, the game had only 27 percent positive ratings on Steam, putting it squarely in the worst category, “Mostly Negative.” There was criticism in particular for the newly integrated anti-cheat system, which spoils the fun for PC gamers. But there is not only criticism for the PC version, but especially for the Switch offshoot.

Obsolete Legacy Edition

There is no real FIFA 23 for the Nintendo Switch this year either, but again only a corresponding “Legacy Edition”. This repeats the procedure from previous years: FIFA 18 and FIFA 19 were completely ported to the switch, and since then the handheld console has been consistently neglected. From FIFA 20, only FIFA 19 was taken as the basis and supplemented with current license names and skins. This is now the case again with FIFA 23.

If you get the “current” FIFA for the switch, you pay 40 euros without getting any gameplay changes from the last three years. Of course, crossplay is not included either. After all: In addition to a general update of clubs and players, there are now women’s club teams for the first time. Still, like the previous two versions, FIFA 23 on the Switch would have been better offered as DLC for a fraction of the price.

Finally on the topic: FIFA 23 on Steam: Many players, catastrophic user ratings also because of anti-cheat

Anyone who owns one of the older FIFA versions on the switch and does not necessarily need the new licensed content should therefore avoid FIFA 23. And at least for the time being, that should also apply to the PC version of the game. On Steam, this is now also cropping 32 percent positive reviews a little better, but the majority of fans are still dissatisfied. Here EA will first have to help with a few updates in order to give the new FIFA the necessary finishing touches, at least on this platform.
