Meta Quest 3: Detailed leak on the new consumer headset

The VR headset developed by the Meta subsidiary Oculus quest 2 celebrates its first birthday in October, and in the almost year since its release, the headset has enjoyed great popularity. According to Steam hardware stats almost every second VR player uses the Quest 2, giving it a significantly higher market share than all its competitors. Of course, this VR headset is not perfect either, and so there is still a lot of potential for a successor

Leak to quest 3

A detailed leak has now been published for this very successor: In the YouTube video of the channel SadlyItsBradley numerous technical drawings and details for the MetaQuest 3 revealed, which is said to appear in 2023 and replace Quest 2. The authenticity of the leaked information cannot be confirmed. A falsification of the presented images would be quite expensive.

According to the channel’s operator, Bradley Lynch, the Quest 3 will bring some changes compared to its predecessor. The basic concept remains the same: the VR headset should once again be able to work independently and rely on camera-based tracking. Two black and white and two RGB cameras as well as a depth camera are said to be installed on the front. In addition, the hardware should also receive an upgrade: the Snapdragon XR2 is said to be replaced by the Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2. In addition, the Quest 3 is said to offer 12 GB of RAM and 512 GB of storage space, whereas the Quest 2 only has 6 GB of RAM and a maximum of 256 GB of storage space.

With regard to the playback quality, the video mentions pancake lenses instead of Fresnel lenses. Changing the lenses could lead to a reduction in size and weight, since pancake lenses can be installed closer to the user’s eyes. On the other hand, playback should continue to take place via an LCD panel, which is said to be installed in a rotated manner for better field of view coverage. Unfortunately, concrete values for the field of view or resolution are missing in the leak.

The Quest 3 is supposed to remain in the price range of the predecessor, which limits the hardware upgrade. According to the video, this applies in particular to eye-tracking: It is said that there will not be such a thing in the Quest 3, since the corresponding hardware would be too expensive. Among other things, this would eliminate the option of saving computing power by only rendering the currently focused image areas in full resolution.

Finally, it should be mentioned once again about the leak that the individual details cannot be checked and that one or the other change would be possible before the release. At least the ongoing development of the Quest 3 should be safe given the great success of the predecessor.
