Overwatch officially closes its servers

After its launch in 2016, Blizzard Entertainment officially closed its popular multiplayer game Overwatch. It was something fans knew would happen ahead of time, as Blizzard previously revealed that the original title would be shutting down as a way to make room for Overwatch 2. And while the sequel’s release won’t take place until later this week, fans fans are remembering the original game.

Blizzard has finally shut down the Overwatch servers. This move was made before the release of Overwatch 2 so that Blizzard could prepare the new version of the game that will arrive on Tuesday, October 4. Although this means fans won’t be able to play Overwatch in any capacity for the next two days, Blizzard has encouraged social media users to share their favorite moments from the game’s history.

While it may seem strange for Blizzard to end Overwatch considering this is a game many people previously paid money for, it’s worth emphasizing that Overwatch 2 will be free-to-play, which means Blizzard doesn’t expect fans to buy a new version of the title. one more time. Additionally, those who purchased Overwatch will get a handful of goodies when they log into Overwatch 2 for the first time. Not to mention, skins from the previous game will also carry over to Overwatch 2. While there may be some mechanical, systemic, and cosmetic changes in this follow-up, it will basically be a new version of Overwatch that has been playable for years.

Overwatch 2 will be released later this week on October 4 and will be considered “early access” for now. Like the previous installment, the sequel will be playable on PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and PC platforms.
