Overwatch: YouTuber Sends Secret Message From Ex-Chef Kaplan - Touches And Amuses Longtime Fans

Former Overwatch boss Jeff Kaplan has one last message and warns all players about Overwatch 2. At least one YouTuber put that in his mouth with great amusement.

Overwatch 2 is about to launch and is dividing the community. Many are looking forward to the innovations and the quasi “relaunch” of the game, while there is also a lot of criticism of the Battle Pass or the unlocking of new heroes. In the course of the release, an “old YouTube legend” has also reappeared – Dinoflask. He enjoys an extremely good reputation in the Overwatch 2 community and is now impressing with a new video.

YouTuber becomes well-known and popular with Jeff Kaplan’s “Reinterpretation”.

Who is Dinoflask? Dinoflask is a YouTuber best known for one type of video: Overwatch parodies. There used to be so-called “developer updates” where former game director Jeff Kaplan talked about the game. Dinoflask took those videos, edited them together differently, and created a whole different narrative. So he puts words into Jeff Kaplan’s mouth that he never said in this context and spins his own stories with it.

Most of the time it consists of making all the changes in the game just so that Jeff Kaplan always wins and he gets more tears out of the players.

The works of Dinoflask are extremely popular for parody videos, often have around 500,000 views, sometimes scratching the million mark.

Although Jeff Kaplan was repeatedly parodied in the videos, Kaplan really liked the videos – he even invited Dinoflask to his 15th anniversary at Blizzard.

Since Jeff Kaplan left Blizzard in April last year, however, things have also gone quiet around Dinoflask – until now.

What’s in the video? In the latest video “Overwatch 2 – A New Era” Dinoflask lets the former chief developer Jeff Kaplan reappear. Aaron Keller (the new boss) is just explaining that they realized “that Overwatch 2 was developed with the goal of disappointing players in terms of releasing new content. If you’re interested in Overwatch 2, we look forward to it […] making you pay for new features, maps, and new heroes.”

Then Jeff Kaplan “hacks” into Aaron Keller’s developer update. Kaplan explains that his time is limited and he needs to deliver important information quickly.

Aaron Keller is a robot that Kaplan assembled from a PlayStation, an Xbox and a PC. In the beginning Kaplan was still able to influence the development of Overwatch 2 after his resignation, but now the mech has gotten completely out of control and decides the fate of Overwatch 2 on its own:

“There is no telling what horror he will bring to the gaming community. It starts with Doomfist becoming a tank, but it ends with Keller becoming a tank [Tank] located – in front of your house and demands to see your Overwatch 2 pre-order.”

In good, old Dinoflask manner, the video is not only a loving parody, but is often peppered with black humor. Kaplan explains that he followed the discussions in the forum about his departure. He’s read theories that he was fired for “hitting a car into a group of Mei cosplayers,” not completing his “weekly sexual assault quota,” or “being in the office drinking rum and playing with himself.” . A raven-black allusion to the sexism scandal at Blizzard.

Those who like black humor will get their money’s worth in the latest Dinoflask video.

The new Overwatch boss reacts: The video didn’t go past the Overwatch team either. The new game director, Aaron Keller, has already reacted to the video on Twitter – and apparently takes it with humor. Because he says:

I could never pinpoint exactly what I was missing, but today I finally feel like a real Overwatch game director 😀 😀 😀

Community reacts enthusiastically: The reactions to the video are mostly positive and sometimes even very emotional. For many fans, Jeff Kaplan, but also the Dinoflask parodies, are an important part of Overwatch’s identity. According to the comments on YouTube and the Overwatch subreddit:

  • “This feels more emotional than anything Blizzard could have ever done.”
  • “God, I know this is fake, but hearing Jeff Kaplan’s words on this fills me with such joy.”
  • “It makes me really sad. I’ve put so much time into Overwatch 1 over the years and so many good memories. I still remember it whenever they released a new ‘developer update’. This feels like the end of an era. Heroes never die.”
  • “Jeff Kaplan singing “My Way” has done more to remind me of my past love for Overwatch than anything official that has come out in the last 3 years. My respects, sir.”

What do you think of such parodies and compilations? An ingenious kind of art and criticism? Or just disrespectful and unfunny?
