The First Transistor (PCGH-Retro, October 03)

Sony unveils the PS3 and YouTube goes online (PCGH-Retro, May 16)

from Henner Schroeder
The first transistor is patented – this happened on October 3rd. Every day, PC Games Hardware takes a look back at the young but eventful history of the computer.

… 1950: A small switch changes the world: the computer revolution would be unthinkable without transistors. On October 3, 1950, Bell employees John Bardeen, Walter Brattain and William Shockley were granted the US patent for their invention. In the years that followed, the transistor replaced the vacuum tube and became the basis for all later computers. The three researchers, who later received the Nobel Prize in Physics for it, had already developed it in December 1947 – but the invention of this extremely important component actually goes back even further: the first patents were registered in Germany as early as 1926.
