Project Hadar: CD Projekt announces an all-new RPG

What kind of game will Hadar be?

What kind of game will Hadar be?

CD Projekt has a lot planned: Not only was a new cyberpunk game announced at a conference call, but also two other The Witcher titles that are to come in addition to the already announced New Saga trilogy. And as if that weren’t enough, is with Hadar also a completely new brand in development.

Hadar becomes CDPR’s first own brand

There isn’t much to know about Project Hadar yet, at least it was previously revealed to shareholders. However, there were still a few small bits of information that give us at least a small idea of what Hadar is all about.

This is what CD Projekt revealedthat Hadar is a standalone IP that is “significantly different from The Witcher and Cyberpunk 2077”. It is still in the concept phase and is being developed entirely in-house. Since 2021, a small team has been working on the game, which is obviously an RPG again. Michał Nowakowski, SVP of Business Development at CD Projekt, at least indirectly confirms the genre in an interview (via VGC):

When it comes to genre, we make certain types of games and I think it’s safe to assume that we want to continue making games within that type of genre, so you can get an idea of what kind of game to expect.

Here are the other announcements:

What could Hadar be about?

It shouldn’t come as a big surprise that CDPR shouldn’t deviate much from role-playing. The question of the setting is more exciting anyway. So far, Hadar is just the code name, which doesn’t necessarily have to allow conclusions to be drawn about the game, but could. Because if this is the case, then it is interesting to know what Hadar stands for, among other things:

  • Archaeological site in Ethiopia, where, among other things, fossils of Australopithecus afarensis (hominids) were found. Among them the well-known fossil “Lucy”.
  • Star in the constellation Centaur
  • male first name with Arabic, Hebrew and Persian origin

If we now lean out the window with this background knowledge and speculate, then could we maybe expect the next Mass Effect with Hadar? We can at least rule out a cyberpunk setting and medieval fantasy, since Hadar is said to be very different from The Witcher and Cyberpunk 2077. Also, we don’t think the game has anything to do with fossil digs or a protagonist named Hadar. A SciFi setting sounds more likely because of the serial image.

But these are only first ideas! It may just as well be that no conclusions can be drawn from the code name at all.

But what do you think Hadar is about? What would you like for a game?
