What are the consequences of the volcanic eruption?

Nothing will remain of the former green of the southern lands and the fertile plain will become the give way to the dreary wasteland. Only Mount Doom, located in the center of Mordor, will survive the great terraforming and many survive for thousands of years.

Accompanying the eruption, an ash cloud will cover the sky and plunge the land into darkness – literally. This allows the sun intolerant Orcs also during the day to spread fear and terror and the rest to subjugate people.

But what exactly is Mount Doom?

As already mentioned, Mount Doom is the center of Mordor. It measures about 1300 meters and is located in the Plateau of Gorgoth. A road leads to it from the east flank of the mountain Sauron’s Barad-dûr Fortress.

In the middle of the crater is a rock chamber called the Sammath Naur. From here you can get to Cracks of Doom and what is within blazing fire of fate. This becomes important when it comes to the One Ring.

A mountain with many names

In English, Mount Doom is called Mount Doom titled. But that’s not the only name Tolkien came up with for it. He is as well Redflame Mountain known. In the language of the elves (Sindarin) he is called Orodruin, which can be translated as “mountain of fire”. Another Sindarin form is Amon Amarth.

Digression: Amon Amarth should be known as the band name to many music lovers. However, the Swedish metallers see themselves less as Tolkien followers. Rather, they think the name represents the band’s point of view well.

The One Ring: Forged in Mount Doom

Mount Doom is first mentioned in connection with the One Ring. Sauron himself once forged his master ring in the fires of Mount Doom. Confining his spirit and much of his power into the jewel, there was one firm bond between Mount Doom and the Dark Lord.

From then on, an eruption of the volcano was a sure sign Sauron’s rise in power. This covenant can only be Destruction of the One Ring to get broken. This would free Sauron’s spirit from the ring and extinguish his power in the seething magma.

Would the One Ring destroyed, Sauron’s reign of terror would also come to an end. Only in Mount Doom, where the ring was once forged by Sauron, can it be destroyed again. One seemingly impossible task, who should take care of a little hobbit. But this is another story.
