RTX 4000: RTX 4090 maximum with over 610 watts of power consumption, RTX 4080 with 29K in Time Spy
Nvidia’s RTX 4090 and RTX 4080 also seem to be able to operate at clock rates of 3 GHz. The former consumes more than 600 watts at its peak, while the RTX 4080 achieves almost 29,000 points in the 3D-Mark Time Spy with a power consumption of 330 watts. Read more about this below.
While AMD has been using a very high core clock since the RDNA 2 graphics cards, Nvidia was still working with clock rates of around 2 GHz for Ampere. With Ada Lovelace, these increase significantly and the base clock rates are already more than 2.2 GHz, the boost clock rates also reach 2.6 GHz or more depending on the model. On the one hand, this gives hope for overclockers and, on the other hand, ensures high power consumption, which has to be cooled and, above all, paid for at the moment.

Nvidia itself has already shown the Geforce RTX 4090 with a clock speed of 2.85 GHz, while it was kept in check by the standard air cooler. With a little effort and luck in the silicon lottery, 3 GHz seems to be possible without any problems. There are now first screenshots on Bilibili that show a Geforce RTX 4090 at such clock rates. The core clock is exactly 3,000 MHz and the MSI combustor runs in the background, which can test the stability of graphics cards. The power consumption is 425 watts, a value that the Geforce RTX 4090 can also achieve in standard operation.

Unfortunately, no information is known about the temperature and the exact cooler model. In Furmark, a tool that provokes maximum heat development, the RTX 4090 achieves a core clock of 2,640 MHz and a significantly higher power consumption. According to the display, 616 watts are flowing through the 12VHPWR connection at the moment and the clock can still be kept on an apparently air-cooled card. Nvidia’s Geforce RTX 4090 should be available from October 12th. be available in stores and from 11.10. should be expected with the first tests. These will then show how much performance gain is possible through such power consumption and how much potential a Geforce RTX 4090 has when undervolting to increase efficiency.
In the meantime, a first screenshot of the Geforce RTX 4080 16 GiB, which is expected in November, has also been published, showing it heavily overclocked. With a core clock of 3 GHz as well and a power consumption of 333 watts, the graphics card achieved a GPU score of almost 29,000 points in the 3D Mark Time Spy. The graphics score of a Geforce RTX 3090 Ti, on the other hand, averages around 22,000 points, so the new graphics card is significantly faster.
