The Settlers: User feedback gets worse with every developer update

from Yusuf Hatic
New developer update, new headwind: The settlers don’t seem to be making friends in the community even with the changed tool system.

The critical feedback for the development team about the upcoming new edition of the construction strategy game “The Settlers” doesn’t stop – but it’s their own fault if the community thinks so. The bone of contention this time was a new blog post on the Technical Test Server (TTS), in which the Settlers creators address the changes in terms of tool usage.

As the developers say there, the new settler offshoot no longer distinguishes between different tools, but is managed as a unified resource. This was decided to “not burden players with the additional task of having to manage their tools down to the smallest detail”. The intensive advance planning required in the old system should be minimized as well as the frustration factor that would arise from non-functioning buildings or surplus tools.

The community feedback on this was not long in coming and remains at a highly critical level after the food update for the new settler game caused a lack of understanding a few weeks ago. Specifically, the users in the official Ubisoft forum are bothered by the simplification of the game and the lack of depth, which was already criticized in the closed beta for the settler in February 2022. User Zwoks-Stef does not see any concrete improvements in any of the TTS news compared to the test period and still has doubts that anything will change here, since the statements in the settler blog posts are still vaguely formulated.

In addition, the new settler game is moving further and further away from the original gameplay. According to user UltimateSD, problems are invented that the old parts, despite their complexity, did not have. Thus, the in-game storage situation noted by the developer, where there was too much building material towards the end, would not be due to the original tooling system. Instead, there would be too few buildings to build that aren’t just optional. Anticipation of a game release looks different – especially since after Ubsioft’s announcement that The Settlers will be postponed indefinitely, it is unclear whether the game will be released this year (or at all).
