CoD: Modern Warfare 2 – only gamble with a cell phone number, prepaid is left out

The fact that Activision and Blizzard run their games on the Californian developer studio’s Battlenet no longer only affects sales, but also the playability of the individual titles. Overwatch 2 fans recently felt this – and a limitation of Blizzard’s shooter will also apply to the upcoming Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

Is Activision Blizzard Easing Restrictions on Individual Fans?

Because if you want to gamble Modern Warfare 2, you have to store a mobile phone number in your own Battlenet account, just like in the case of Overwatch 2. According to Activision Blizzard, this measure is intended to curb illegal activities such as cheating and toxicity within the community. It also ensures an increased level of account security.

However, there is an important restriction for storing a cell phone number, which is described in the relevant support article on the Battlenet website as follows:

“Battle.net phone notifications are designed for SMS-enabled mobile phones:

• Messenger apps like iMessage (iOS) or WhatsApp (iOS, Android) are not supported.
• This service may not work with prepaid phones.
• This service cannot be used with Voice over IP (VoIP). VoIP numbers routed to a local provider cannot use this service.

Each phone number can only be associated with one Battle.net account.”

So this means that CoD fans who only have a prepaid smartphone cannot gamble Modern Warfare 2. In the case of Overwatch 2, the community reacted so angrily to this restriction that Blizzard gave in at short notice and relaxed the conditions for some players. The company has not yet commented on whether this will also be the case for Modern Warfare 2 and why this restriction exists at all.
