A new PvE MMORPG is coming Saturday: 7 things you need to know before launching Embers Adrift

Ember's Adrift Cooldown

With Embers Adrift, a new indie MMORPG will be released on October 15th, which focuses on PvE. Especially fans of old school games who like to interact with other players will get their money’s worth here. MeinMMO editor Alexander Leitsch summarizes everything important for you.

When is Ember’s Adrift coming out? The new MMORPG will officially be released on October 15 at 7:00 a.m. German time. Then everyone who buys a game version for $29.99 can get started. This includes a subscription for the first 30 days.

In addition, there was a head start for alpha testers. This already started on October 12th, but also required that you buy a more expensive pre-release version of the game. Beta testers who have also purchased a separate package can start as early as October 14th.

Embers Adrift is a PvE-only MMORPG

What is the game? Embers Adrift is a PvE sandbox MMORPG. Quests are constantly awaiting you in the game world, but the developers follow the philosophy that every player should be able to experience their own adventure and that the NPCs are not completely stupid. There is no such thing as boring collecting plants.

So you can go out and complete quests, but you can also hunt for bosses, complete dungeons or just sit around the campfire with other players. Since there are already really heavy monsters in the starting area, the aspect that you have to play until the endgame for challenges is eliminated.

The MMORPG relies on three classes that represent tank, healer and DD. From level 6 you can also choose a second specialization, which also consists of the three options. A total of 9 combinations are possible.

Is it really only PvE? Yes. The developers have completely dispensed with PvP in the open world, but also in arenas.

You really need to read quest texts

How do the quests work? Very different from modern MMORPGs. Where WoW adds more comfort features with each expansion – such as markings on the map – you have to read every quest text in Embers Adrift. Because there are no markings and the minimap is also omitted.

This means that you have to deal with the game more intensively, but sometimes also have to read a lot of ramblings.

Pay attention to the strength of the monsters

What is special about the monsters? In Embers Adrift, all monsters have markers. There are arrows just to the left of the name:

  • An arrow means the monster can be defeated alone.
  • Two arrows mean you can do it alone, but it’s best to work in pairs.
  • Three arrows means it’s a group opponent.

Monsters with three arrows are also right in the starting area. If you don’t pay attention, you will experience a nasty surprise, almost as if you had taken a wrong turn in Elden Ring.

The combat system is rather sluggish

The new MMORPG relies on a rather leisurely and tactical combat system. Each attack has long animations associated with it, and there are global cooldowns that limit the next usable action. In addition, you often have to rest at the start to regenerate life points.

The attraction comes more from the interaction in groups and the tactical component.

However, you can be picked up from a “downed state” by other players if you die. This system is also used in New World and Guild Wars 2, and it fits perfectly with the game’s social spirit.

Global and sometimes long cooldowns slow down the action.

Other players are essential for gameplay

Embers Adrift focuses on challenges in all areas of the game. That’s why the MMORPG is only really fun when other players are there. A group can consist of a maximum of six players.

Because everything is played slower and more tactically overall, an exchange in voice chat is also a pleasant change. The developers themselves say that you should experience adventures with others in Embers Adrift, which you in turn will later tell others about.

If you don’t have a group at hand, you can use the “O” key to open an LFG tool and look for other players. Of course there is also a guild system to keep in touch with fellow players.

Graphics like they were in the early 2000s

What about the optics? Embers Adrift is an indie MMORPG. Nowhere is this better seen than in the graphics. The attacks are very static, the textures aren’t particularly high-resolution, and otherwise it looks like a game from the late 2000s. Anyone hoping for a totally detailed character editor like in Black Desert will also be disappointed.

In return, the game emphasizes “realism”. Swords aren’t huge, magic isn’t overly important, and there aren’t any abnormalities in physics like some Asian MMORPGs.

A special feature is also at night. Because it is really pitch black and makes exploring very difficult.

You have to take out a subscription, there is no shop for that

How is Ember’s Adrift funded? First you need access to the game. It currently costs $29.99. It also includes a subscription for the first month. A subscription will still cost $9.99 per month in 2022, but will be increased to $12.99 from 2023. So it’s equivalent to the cost of WoW or Final Fantasy XIV.

However, Embers Adrift waives other costs. There is no shop, so there are no purchasable skins or boosters. Everything has to be earned manually.
