LoL: Pros keep buying the worst item for their position, still win – but how?
Wrong item choices exist in every division of League of Legends and even the pro players of LoL sometimes get confused. This was also shown in the game between G2 Esports and DWG KIA when Heo “ShowMaker” Su built the Morellonomicon on Azir.
What kind of items are these exactly? It’s primarily about the items with the effect of the “Gushing Wound”. This causes enemies affected by the effect to have their healing reduced.
The “Morellonomicon” or “Morellos” is an item for champions who rely on life and ability power. Grievous Wounds effect reduces champion healing by 25% by default. This increases to a 40% healing reduction when the enemy falls below 50% health.
However, this is only about the healing that happens in the next 4 seconds after the enemy is hit with magic damage. This effect can be extended by 4 more seconds if you have bought the item “Liandry’s Sorrow”.
But how did this effect affect the game?
There is a shop function for the Morellonomicon that was introduced especially for one player.
Why is the item still bought by the professionals?
What did the item do against G2? In the first match of Group B between G2 Esports and DWG KIA, DWG’s mid laner had opted for the Morellonomicon. Azir faced off against Seraphine, who is said to provide longer stamina in battles through healing, CC, and poke damage.
For this game, the Morellonomicon was only partially worthwhile for Azir. The purchase results in Seraphine not being able to play as aggressively as she would have liked. Showmaker was already leading with 3/0/3 at that point. Showmaker could have exploited this advantage even more with a different item, such as the “Shadow Flame”.

Here you can see when the values from the morellonomicon are knocked out. In the first 6 minutes that Showmaker held the item, heal was reduced by a whopping 4 lives. That’s less than a minion attack in lane.
A full 890 healing was reduced by the end of the game. That’s pretty little for a 32-minute game.
Is the item suitable for your ranked games? The Morellonomicon is a helpful item when it comes to reducing a lot of healing. It’s about healing in battle. These can be champions like Soraka, Aatrox, Sylas or Olaf, who heal a lot during the fight.
If the healing takes place after the battle, the item’s effect will not help you much. It takes up a slot in the inventory and delays your stronger game phase. “LS” also commented on the item and repeated what he had always said about the Morellonomicon. Namely that the item has significantly better alternatives.
In addition, the additional effect of the Morellonomicon only takes effect when the opponent falls below 50% health. This effect is “joke”, as LS puts it.
If you are considering buying the item, you must first ask yourself how much healing the opponents have in battle. Or maybe there is a better item that boosts your damage in the early game stages.
