This Thursday there was another new update for the N64 catalog on the Nintendo Switch. Above all, an old classic is new, namely Pilot wings 64.

Another N64 launch title is coming to the Switch

With Pilotwings 64, the N64 library will be expanded again. The game, which was originally released in June 1996 for the Nintendo 64 and with which you whiz through the air in various flying vehicles, can now also be played on the current Nintendo console. The graphics look much clearer and sharper compared to the original, but of course the whole thing is not a remake.

Probably the most important innovation is the frame rate of 60 fps, which the game achieves on the switch. While they aren’t always kept 100%, the gameplay still feels a lot smoother than the original. In a game that spends a lot of time in the air, this is of course very advantageous.

In this video you can see the comparison of the old and the new version:

An interesting trivia fact about this is that the menu of the original was actually running at 60 fps back then, but only 30 fps was achieved during gameplay. That means the engine could have doubled the frame rate back in the 90s, but the Nintendo 64’s hardware hit the brakes.

This is how you get the classic

Most important requirement: You must have an active Nintendo Switch Online account with the expansion pack own. In the home screen of your switch, you then select the red button of the online service at the bottom. Pilotwings 64 is currently recommended to you on the home screen, otherwise select “Expansion Pack” from the list on the left. There you will come across the catalog of N64 games, from which you can get all the games available there on your switch.

The library keeps getting bigger

The online library is constantly being expanded with retro games, and a big boost has been announced for next year, including one of my personal highlights: Pokémon Stadium. Annika is also really looking forward to it, as you can read about it in her article.

Are you happy about the new addition Pilotwings 64? What other retro game are you waiting for?
