Starfield will be Bethesda’s next big RPG, but this time in space.

In a new Starfield video, Game Director Todd Howard from developer studio Bethesda answers various fan questions about the game. Among other things, it is about the character system of the SciFi RPG, which allows us to define certain characteristics and properties right at the beginning. But if you are dissatisfied with them at some point, you should be able to influence them later in the game through quests and even get rid of them completely.

Starfield: The character system gives you traits that you can get rid of later

That’s what it’s about: According to Todd Howard, Starfield relies on a so-called trait system. These are character traits or traits that you can set at the beginning of the game. They always have an advantage and a disadvantage.

Some of these features are already visible in the video and apparently we can choose a total of three of them in the character editor. However, they do not have to be final and can still be changed in the game.

We already see these traits:

  • Alien DNA: Apparently, we’re not just purely human. How that can be changed later should be very exciting.
  • Dream Home: We probably already own a house, but we also have debts because of it.
  • empath: I guess we’re very empathetic.
  • extrovert: The opposite of introvert.
  • Freestar Collective Settlers: Apparently we belong to the Freestar Collective and have settled a place.
  • Hero Worshiped: We have a real fan who always talks to us, but also gives us presents.

  • introvert: we are not extroverts.
  • kid stuff: still unclear.
  • Neon Street Advice: Possibly similar to a street kid in Cyberpunk 2077?
  • Raised Enlightened: Not clear. Possibly raised among the enlightened.
  • Raised Universal: Perhaps a different kind of religion as opposed to the enlightened ones.
  • Serpent’s Embrace: Sounds like a cult or something.
  • Spaced: drugs?
  • Taskmaster: Possibly a lot of tasks already done.
  • Terra Company: Not clear.
  • United Colonies Native: Apparently born and raised in a colony.

Doesn’t have to be final: According to Todd Howard, there will be a way in Starfield to get rid of the appropriate traits. This could happen via an activity or quest, but otherwise remains unclear. That sounds promising, so we don’t have to deal with an annoying disadvantage forever or start from scratch.

What else is new about Starfield?

long speech: Todd Howard reveals that Starfield contains over 250,000 lines of dialogue – more than double that of Fallout 4 and more than four times that of Skyrim.

Long flights: There’s also a fuel system that takes a lot of brain power. We should never run out of fuel, but it regulates how far we can fly with our spaceship.

More about Starfield:

When is Starfield coming? It’s going to take a while longer. The game was originally supposed to be released in 2022, but was then pushed back to 2023. Exactly when it will appear is not yet certain. But it now seems clear that it will not appear for PS4 and PS5, but only for Xbox Series S/X and PC or via Game Pass Ultimate and Xbox Cloud Gaming in streaming.

What do you think of the many lines of dialogue and the character system? Which of the features shown here would you choose?
