Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 also officially uses SMS verification, called SMS Protect, which already caused criticism in Overwatch 2 and was later overturned for long-time players.
However, in Modern Warfare 2, this feature is limited to PC only, console players don’t have to.
What the feature is used for
“SMS verification is an important tool for enforcing anti-cheat measures because it attacks the root cause of account creation for this purpose,” it says. “So playing Modern Warfare 2 on PC requires a phone number that can receive text messages.”
“However, existing Call of Duty Warzone players who have already verified their account will not be required to provide any additional information to access Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2.0.”
Other Modern Warfare 2 news:
“Also, the SMS policy for Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2.0 on Battle.net is the same as for Call of Duty Warzone on PC, which was introduced back in May 2020. A mobile number must be linked to the Steam account in order to play Modern Warfare 2 to be able to play on this platform.”
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 will be released on October 28 for PC, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, Xbox One and PlayStation 4. Those who pre-order can play the campaign a week early.
