It’s been a long time since The Simpsons episode “The Springfield Files” first aired. A fan has now picked up a joke from it for their own little game.
It’s about the Waterworld arcade game that Milhouse plays in the episode, which is also a crossover with the X-Files.
Not that frustrating in reality
As a result, Milhouse throws 40 quarters into the game machine and is ultimately only able to take one step before the machine prompts him to throw in 40 quarters again. Which of course he does.
If you’ve always wanted to play this game yourself, now is your chance. The good news: It doesn’t cost you any money and you can take more than one step.
Twitch streamer and indie developer Macaw45 developed the project, it can be done for free can be downloaded here for the PC.
“I’ve always been fascinated by the fake video games that featured occasionally on The Simpsons, and the Waterworld game always fascinated me as a kid,” says Macaw45.
“Obviously this is just a little joke poking fun at how expensive the film was to produce at the time, but this bogus game itself with his huge Kevi Costner character on screen taking a single step before the machine asking for more coins always made me so curious as to what would be behind the one screen you see on the show…”
My freeware PC game, Kevin Costner’s Waterworld, a real and full imagining of the ‘fake’ Waterworld arcade game seen in The Simpsons will be released during a release stream on the 9th of October my time (the 8th in America).
