Nvidia reports briefly and dryly: The launch of the Geforce RTX 4080 with 12GB will be reversed. The 16 GB version will come unchanged on November 16th.
Just presented in this way, the Geforce RTX 4080 12GB had to put up with a lot of criticism: upper-class naming and price, but with cuts in RAM, computing cores and thus performance. Whether this criticism was the reason for the current report – we do not know: The Geforce RTX 4080 12GB no longer appears. Nvidia gives that on its US website in one news message known.
Nvidia says in a few sentences, loosely translated: “The 12 GB 4080 will be ‘unlaunched’ [oder ‚ungelauncht‘]; The RTX 4080 12GB is a fantastic card, but it’s misnamed. Two video cards with a 4080 designation confuses people. So we hit the ‘unlaunch’ button for the RTX 4080 12GB. The RTX 4080 is amazing and is on its way to delighting gamers around the world starting November 16th.”
In the last sentence, Nvidia looks back on the previous day and is sure that the RTX 4080 will also be duly celebrated: “If the queues around the block and the enthusiasm for the 4090 are any indication, the launch of the 4080 will be fantastic.” there are different pictures from the offline sales start at different places with waiting, willing buyers.
The Geforce RTX 4080 with 12GB should start at 1,099 euros. An assembly with 7,680 (instead of 9,728) cores and a consumption of 285 watts would have “qualified” them as RTX 4070 or RTX 4070 Ti compared to their big siblings. As such, with the specs mentioned, it was also in the rumor mill for a long time. It remains to be seen whether we will see them again as such in the future.
