Razer launches an alternative to the Nintendo Switch: The Razer Edge. However, the handheld is less like a high-performance gaming handheld like the Steam Deck, but rather relies on streaming from the cloud like the Logitech G Cloud. However, Razer scores above all with the display. This not only offers a fairly high resolution, but also a refresh rate of 144 Hertz.

That’s what it’s about: The success of the Nintendo Switch apparently ensures that many manufacturers are bringing similar products onto the market. The fact that cloud gaming is on the rise does the rest. Now there is a new handheld from Razer, which has now been presented in more detail.

The Razer Edge: The key data

The Razer Edge is a dedicated gaming handheld that also, but not only, relies on cloud gaming. It consists of two parts: a mini tablet and the new Razer Kishi V2 Pro controller. It can also be removed.

The technology is impressive: You can expect a 6.8-inch AMOLED display with a resolution of 2400×1080 pixels and 144 Hz. Razer clearly leaves the Switch or the Steam Deck behind.

There is also 8 GB of LPDDR5 RAM, 128 GB of storage space and a Qualcomm Snapdragon G3x Gen chip. This means that you shouldn’t expect too much graphics power here, despite the new processor. The Razer Edge still tends to be designed more for mobile titles or cloud gaming. Android 12 is used as the operating system.

It appears in 2 variants: You can either get the Razer Edge in a WLAN version if, for example, you play a lot at home on the couch. If you tend to be on the go a lot, the Razer Edge is also available as a 5G model for more mobility and streaming on the go.

Compatibility no problem? According to Razer, the Edge should work with “thousands of games” and, for example, have the Epic Games Launcher preinstalled. But the focus is also on remote play apps and streaming offers such as Nvidia Geforce Now or Xbox Cloud Gaming.

The Kishi V2 Pro controller features haptic feedback and a 3.5mm audio connector. The previous versions didn’t have that, so buyers should be happy about that.

When will the Razer Edge be released? There is no exact date yet. But with January 2023 there is at least a rough time frame for the launch. The handheld should be able to be tried out at CES 2023.

What’s the cost? The Wi-Fi version of the Razer Edge costs $399 in the US. There is no price for the 5G version yet. Here on the official Razer site you can reserve an Edge for $5.
