Trymacs has turned its back on FIFA 23 and the entire series. In order for it to come to this, there had to be enlightenment from his own family.

Hamburg – Anyone who thinks of FIFA in the German streaming scene inevitably thinks of Trymacs. In the last few weeks since the release of FIFA 23, the Hamburg streamer has once again caused a stir with sprawling pack openings in Ultimate Team. Now, from one day to the next, Trymacs wants nothing to do with the soccer simulation. Not only that, the streamer is also calling on others to boycott FIFA. Before it came to that, however, he needed a little clarification.

Trymacs: No More FIFA 23 and Pack Openings – YouTube video brings enlightenment

This drove Trymacs to boycott: There are now numerous publications and opinions about the problematic connections between gambling and video games. Just a few weeks ago, Jan Böhmermann also denounced several streamers because of this. With Trymacs, aka Maximilian Stemmler, it only took his own brother to clarify the matter. Nicolas Stemmler runs the YouTube channel How To Be Human and explained there himself in a comprehensive video how mechanics such as loot boxes or FUT packs in FIFA 23 affect the human psyche.

Trymacs recently reacted to this video of his brother in the live stream on Twitch. The whole thing seems to have led to a kind of enlightenment for the streamer, because after the video, FIFA 23 promptly flew off his hard drive. Not only that, prompted by his chat, Trymacs now feels motivated to boycott FIFA and future EA football games.

Gambling can have these effects: The How To Be Human video focuses on how FIFA 23 and other games manipulate their players. In fact, video games could lead to similar long-term effects as “real” gambling. The examples and points that Nicolas Stemmler cites are not exactly thin:

  • In gambling (also in video games), big wins are deliberately extremely rare in order to keep the expectation of a win and the resulting euphoria as high as possible.
  • Accordingly, a game like FIFA 23 is pay-to-win: the more money you put into packs, the higher the probability of eventually drawing a particularly strong card, such as an icon.
  • FIFA 23 suggests that players either have to grind forever for new packs or buy them quickly for real money.
  • Due to the increased strength of a team with good players, the loot boxes are also present in direct gameplay, which encourages purchases even more.
  • Different packs in different sizes create a “illusion of control‘ about the contents of the loot box.
  • According to new studies, over-buying loot boxes can have similar long-term effects as actual gambling.
  • These long-term consequences include: Increased impulsiveness, poor concentration/attention, desire for short-term rewards.

Trymacs calls: The detailed explanations of How To Be Human cover a lot more points. Max Stemmler seems to have visibly shaken up what his brother says in the video. Not least because Trymacs squandered the value of a small car in FIFA 23 to buy the best team in the world with FUT packs.

After he finished deleting FIFA 23 and FIFA 22 from his PlayStation in the middle of the stream, he made a decision together with the chat: For next year he would encourage other FIFA streamers, like EliasN97 and MontanaBlack, to boycott as well. Whether the project bears fruit, we will probably see at the next EA football game.
