Soaring Xbox prices? Phil Spencer does not rule out price increases

After the PlayStation 5 price increase in August, neither Microsoft nor Nintendo adjusted the prices of their consoles.

As for Xbox, Xbox boss Phil Spencer can’t guarantee there won’t be price increases on “certain things” in the future either.

That’s what Spencer says

“We’ve held the price of our console, we’ve held the price of games and our subscription,” Spencer says (via The Verge).

“I don’t think we can do this forever… I think at some point we’ll have to raise the prices of certain things, but going into the holiday season we felt it was important to keep prices stable.”

Spencer’s words seem to rule out a price hike, at least for this year. Concrete intentions to increase individual prices have not yet been communicated.

According to him, the Xbox Game Pass is now profitable, although the growth curve on the consoles is flattening out. But that is “mainly because at some point you have reached everyone who wants a subscription”.

The situation is different on the PC, where “incredible growth” is recorded. Overall, Game Pass now accounts for 15 percent of Xbox division sales. A number that he assumes will be maintained.

“I don’t think it will get any bigger,” he explains. “I think total revenue is growing, so 15 percent of a larger number, but we probably don’t see that future where 50 to 70 percent of our revenue comes from subscriptions.”
