The previously known cases of melted power adapters on the Geforce RTX 4090 have been compiled on Reddit. Between October 24 and October 29, there were 14 reports of such incidents. Almost half of these relate to a specific custom model.
Anyone who buys such products at the beginning of a new generation often has to endure a few initial teething problems. These usually disappear with later software updates, so that in the worst case you have to reckon with crashes for a certain period of time. This is different with Nvidia’s new Geforce RTX 4090: As we have already reported several times, the power adapter supplied with the graphics card can be overloaded and then melt. A software patch is unlikely to help, and the situation is immensely frustrating for those affected: Customers have paid well over 2,000 euros for their graphics card, only to have it irreversibly damaged after just a few days.
Fortunately, of course, not all buyers of the Geforce RTX 4090 have to deal with the problem: There are some corresponding reports on the Internet, but the graphics card seems to work perfectly for many customers. How many reports there are about the defects is now broken down on Reddit. There the user has u/nestledrink created a list containing the previously known cases together with the affected model.
As of yesterday, there have been 14 verified reports of melted plugs on Reddit, as well as a further four cases of other damage to the adapter or power jack. The other damage occurred in two different models from Zotac and in one custom model each from Asus and MSI.
On the other hand, there have been reports of melting damage in custom designs from Asus, Galax, MSI and Gigabyte. The cases concern both models with 4×8 and 3×8 pin adapters, so it doesn’t seem that only one particular adapter is problematic. However, there is an accumulation with a certain custom design: 6 of the 14 adapter damages relate to the Asus Geforce RTX 4090 TUF Gaming. Whether this model is actually particularly vulnerable cannot be said with certainty based on the overall small number and without the corresponding sales figures.

In any case, the power connection problem for Nvidia is apparently not over yet. Yesterday alone there were four reports of melted adapters and since the start of the list on October 24th there has not been a day without an incident. More reports about defective adapters or power sockets are likely to appear in the next few days until Nvidia presents a solution.
