Twitch streamer Pokimane is facing criticism for a special gift she gave her parents

Pokimane Explains Why She Lost Passion for Twitch: "Streaming and Gaming Don't Have to Be Everything"

Imane “Pokimane” Anys (26) is one of the biggest streamers on Twitch. She is so successful that she could now afford to give her parents a special gift: fund their retirement. However, that called all sorts of critics onto the scene, against which the streamer now defended herself.

Who is Pokimane? Pokimane is among the few women at the helm of Twitch. Since she started streaming in 2013, she has amassed over 9 million followers on the platform. More than 20,000 people watched her on average last year (via sullygnome).

Since a break in July 2022, however, things have been a little quieter for the 26-year-old. Upon her return in September, Pokimane announced she would stream less in the future and focus more on other projects.

If Pokimane is currently on the air, she’s happy to show Blizzard’s new shooter, Overwatch 2.

Gift for parents triggers complaints

Now what was that gift? On October 30, Pokimane announced via Twitter on her official account that she had paid for her parents’ retirement. It is obviously very important for the streamer to be able to do something for her parents.

As an immigrant, she always felt indebted to her parents, the 26-year-old said. Nothing makes her happier than giving something back to them.

Why was there criticism? In the more than 3,000 comments the tweet has received (as of October 31), much admiration for Pokimane has been expressed (via Twitter). But the post also called numerous critics into action.

  • Some viewers apparently felt they had raised funds for the streamer’s parents through their donations and subscriptions, which didn’t seem to sit well with them (via Twitter).
  • Others saw the public post as a sign that Pokimane is more about attention and recognition than doing something for their parents

How did Pokimane react to the criticism? The streamer took the time to respond to both positive and negative comments. She explained that her fans absolutely helped make the gift possible.

However, it was not financed by donations, which would account for less than 5% of their total income so far (via Twitter).

Is that the end of the matter? No, because there was more criticism. Pokimane grew up in French Canada and now lives in California. Some therefore seemed to dislike her use of the term “immigrant”.

And then there were those who didn’t seem to understand why the gift for the streamer was a big deal. After all, you don’t care at all (via Twitter). Pokimane dedicated a separate post to these two groups of critics.

She was not born in Canada, but in the African state of Morocco. Pokimane’s parents emigrated to Canada when she was 4. They would have left their own parents, siblings and friends behind for this.

However, Pokimane emphasizes that her parents were always happy to be able to give her and her brother a better life through these sacrifices.

If she hadn’t grown up in Canada, she wouldn’t have had the access to the internet and gear that would have allowed her to become a content creator in the first place, Pokimane adds. That’s why it means a lot to Pokimane that this career can now finance her parents’ retirement.

Despite all the criticism, Pokimane also received numerous positive comments. Other content creators could understand the desire to give something back to the parents.
