XBSX2, a new PlayStation emulator for Xbox consoles in developer mode, is explored in a video.
The XBSX2 is a new emulator that makes it possible to play PlayStation 2 games on Xbox Series X|S consoles. The prerequisite is that the respective console has been switched to developer mode.
We already reported last year about the DuckStation emulator, which can be used for PlayStation 1 games. With the XBSX2 Emulator presented by YouTuber Modern Vintage Gamer, a way to play PlayStation 2 titles has now been created. The basis comes from stenzek (the developer of DuckStation) who has not yet provided a public version for his emulator PCSX2. XBSX2 is therefore a fork of PCSX2 and was specially designed for Xbox.
The interface is clearly designed and allows adjustments that can be made for each individual game. For example, there is the option to overclock or underclock and you have a variety of options.
On the Xbox Series X, the resolution can easily be adjusted up to 4k for most games. For the Xbox Series S, 2K or 1440p is recommended, with these settings a stable frame rate of 60 FPS was achieved in almost all games.
A rare display error is shown using Ridge Racer as an example. In this case, it is easily possible to play the title in the original. Here the resolution is as low as it used to be, but it should display correctly. According to Modern Vintage Gamer, you will be able to play 95% of the games without this “downgrade” option.
“… I should mention that the Xbox is still the best way to play PlayStation 2 games on your console”, with these words the YouTuber allows himself a small dig at the fact that so far the provision of a Playstation 2 title in PlayStation Premium failed to materialize and concludes: “In summary, just like DuckStation, I’m very impressed with what I’m seeing. With XBSX2’s ability to internally upscale resolution and have high-performance PlayStation 2 games on a 299 Xbox Series S is nothing short of amazing. A ton of work has gone into the PS2 emulation over the past 12 months. It’s great to watch and I will definitely continue to report on the topic.”
