God of War: Ragnarok Review – The Action-Adventure of the Year

After the events of the predecessor, Freya is still not on good terms with Kratos and Atreus.

With the reboot of God of War four years ago, the developers at Santa Monica Studios took a not inconsiderable risk. The game was quite different from the previous installments in the series. However, the courage to realign was rewarded and God of War was showered with praise from critics and players. The title has also garnered countless awards and accolades for Game of the Year – and that in the year when no less an epic than Red Dead Redemption 2 wowed the masses.

With such a template, the expectations for God of War: Ragnarok (buy now ) now of course huge. The drop for a sequel is pretty high if players aren’t offered at least an equivalent spectacle again. After playing through the game thoroughly over the past few weeks and working with several editors, we can say that it lives up to expectations. What’s more, the developers at Santa Monica Studios managed to up the ante in almost every aspect of the game. We were really excited about how the adventure of Kratos and Atreus captivated us.

God of War: Ragnarok | REVIEWS | A divine masterpiece

In the following test, we try to convey to you as best we can what makes this game so outstanding. However, this is not an easy task. Because the focus of God of War: Ragnarök is its fantastic story, in which many of the great innovations and expanded gameplay elements are anchored. Therefore, just mentioning certain features can reveal too much about the story and its characters. Of course we want to avoid spoilers so as not to spoil the fun for you. In some places we will therefore prefer to be somewhat vague. We hope we can still give you a good idea of what makes this game so great.

As in ours the last preview before the test, the game begins very calmly and continues the events of the predecessor without major changes. We remember: After Kratos and Atreus have completed their personal quest, Fimbulwinter descends on the Nine Realms, the harbinger of Ragnarök, the downfall of the gods. Some time has passed since then and Atreus has now grown into a teenager who is increasingly searching for his place in the world. The prophecy of the jotun and his name Loki won’t let him go. He is looking for answers and in doing so he repeatedly comes into conflict with his father, who actually wants nothing more than to protect his son.

But the world outside their sheltered forest has become even more dangerous. Freya has not yet gotten over the death of her son and still thirsts for revenge. And then there’s Odin and his clan, who Kratos also turned against himself with his actions in the first part. Hiding and holding out is not an option. So the two set off in search of Tyr, the God of War of the Norse pantheon, in whom they hope to find a powerful ally. Incidentally, the game does not stop at explanations of facts that you should know from the predecessor. You should definitely have played this one to understand what is happening here. You can watch a summary video in the main menu. But that is much too superficial and hardly explains the most important things in less than two minutes.

Fighting the Prophecy

The fact that the plot doesn’t start from scratch has its advantages. It allows the developers to tell a really well-crafted story that builds on the events of its predecessor. And what a great story they tell. The game sends us on a journey with many emotional ups and downs. There is constant friction between Kratos’ desire to keep his son out of harm’s way and Atreus’ irrepressible need for answers. This time the story is not just a personal adventure of father and son. Ragnarok is coming, which involves many other characters. The developers are consistently expanding existing secondary characters and introducing various excellently integrated new characters.
