WoW: #WarcraftStory gone wrong – how the social media campaign becomes a meme

In the statistics you can see the number of viewers on Twitch for the Overwatch category from mid-March 2022 to the end of June 2022. The big difference is the almost 1.5 million viewers at the start of the first beta phase, when there were beta drops.

With the Action #WarcraftStory the WoW social media team has come up with something very special. By tweeting your character name, realm and region of your character to @Warcraft via Twitter, the Twitter bot will create a small description of your alter ego below. The description usually consists of various achievements or other information from your achievements tab.

Then come great descriptions like, “XYZ has raided into the depths of XY and has been successful over the toughest bosses X times. He also seems to like chicken, having devoured Feast XY 487 times.” It’s somehow wholesome and encourages the community to get involved. Most of the time, however, the descriptions don’t quite work as planned, as the WoW Reddit forum shows.

Most players in WoW (buy now ) seem to be mostly into pet battles, although they swear their character isn’t known for it. Or maybe the other achievements aren’t relevant enough for the Twitter bot to include them in the description?

However, anyone who is singled out as a master pet fighter in their #WarcraftStory is also warned that having tens of thousands of critters on their conscience may not mean being as animal-loving as one pretends to be.

However, some descriptions are obviously falsified by users. The #WarcraftStory action becomes a meme – nothing better can come from a social media action (as long as it’s positive).

This mount collector highlights the field rake as the rarest piece. That’s very macabre. The mount, which was probably bought for several thousand euros, will be soon for free via Twitch Drops distributed to all WoW players and makes the mount significantly less unique.

Displaying the transmog of some characters like this pandaren is also a thing…

For some characters, the description fits the way the creator imagined it. Although… is there a diss hiding in there because you couldn’t loot Invincible from the Lich King yet?
