Westworld canceled after four seasons: Season 5 would have been the finale
“These violent delights have violent ends” is now literally the motto for Westworld, because the HBO series has surprisingly been canceled after four seasons. Particularly frustrating for fans: the next season would already have been the finale.
Westworld, HBO’s sci-fi series, has been canceled in a twist that has shocked fans. The stories about Dolores, Maeve, the man in black and Bernard come to an abrupt end after four seasons. The creators of the series only wanted to produce one more season to complete Westworld. The sci-fi epic was taken out of the race shortly before the home straight. But why?
Westworld hasn’t been as popular as it was in Season 1 for a long time
While many viewers now find it incomprehensible that the Westworld creators are not allowed to see their vision through to the end, a look at the behind-the-scenes numbers might help. Because Westworld may just not have been profitable anymore. Season 1 in 2016 attracted around twelve million viewers for the price of $100 million. And season 4? It has only attracted four million viewers – the Game of Thrones series House of the Dragon has reached a whopping 29 million viewers and costs “only” 125 million dollars. The shocking? According to insiders, Westworld Season 4 cost $160 million. (via The Hollywood Reporters)
Why was Westworld canceled?
The declining viewership is probably due to various factors. On the one hand, fans had to wait far too long for new seasons – Westworld seasons have been around every 2 years since 2016, season 4 took even longer, which was also due to the corona pandemic. On the other hand, such a waiting period is met with bad reviews. Because during the acclaimed season 1 and also season 2 were still well received, season 3 is considered a low point for many viewers. The quality of the new season 4 episodes, which have been released since June 2022, has increased again and could not turn things around.
