EA abandons Project Cars - No future for the racing game series

Electronic Arts has no confidence in the Project Cars series and is halting further development and investment.

As GamesIndustry reported, this decision was announced internally. Affected employees should, if possible, be distributed to other projects.

Why is EA abandoning Project Cars?

According to GamesIndustry, this decision is the result of an evaluation of the Project Cars series after the acquisition of Codemasters and Slightly Mad Studios by the publisher.

As a result, Project Cars was considered unlikely to be a huge hit or fit in with the rest of EA’s racing game portfolio.

“Today we announced an update to our racing portfolio internally,” confirms the publisher. “After evaluating the next Project Cars title and its longer-term growth potential, we have made the decision to discontinue further development and investment in the franchise.”

“Decisions like these are very difficult, but they allow us to focus our attention on areas that we believe have the best opportunities to create experiences that fans will love. We’re focusing on our strengths in our racing portfolio, particularly on licensed IPs and open-world experiences, and growing our franchises to become more social with long-term live services that engage global communities.”

“Games are at the heart of sports and racing entertainment. With fan expectations changing, we recognize the need to evolve our games beyond just playing and provide experiences for fans to watch, create and engage with can connect friends.

The first part of the series, developed by Slightly Mad Studios, was released in 2015, the sequel followed in 2017. Most recently, Project Cars 3 and 2021 Project Cars Go were released for mobile devices.
