God of War Ragnarök: All locations of the Norn chests and how to open them – guide
In God of War Ragnarok there are again the Norn chests to be found, which cannot be opened without a riddle. In this guide, we show you where to find the Norn chests in the game, how to open them, and what rewards you get.

God of War Ragnarök: These are Norn chests and that’s why they’re so important
What are Norn Chests? Norn Chests are large treasure chests in God of War Ragnarök that are not easily opened. They are sealed with rune magic. To open a Norn chest, you need to find three runes in the immediate area and activate them. The puzzles can consist of different puzzles:
- Bells that you have to hit with the ax within a certain time limit.
- Torches that you have to ignite with the Chaos Blades.
- Rotating pillars that you have to adjust so that they each show a rune on the chest.
It is worth opening the Norn Chests as they will give you valuable rewards. These can be:
- Idunn Apple: Maximum life force is increased.
- Horn with blood mead: Maximum Rage is increased.

Svartalfheim
Norn Chest #1: After arriving in Svartalfheim in the Auvrangar Wetlands, hop on a boat and cruise along the river. At the big wheel that blocks the river, you moor right on the beach. You freeze the following geyser with the leviathan axe, then you can jump over to the rune chest. the first rune is directly to the right of the chest on the bluff. That second seal you see on the island behind the chest. For the last seal you have to jump back onto the platform where you crossed the geyser. There is a second geyser there and if you freeze it, you can use the Chaos Blades to pull yourself up onto the plateau. On the tree above is the final seal. Reward: Idunn apple
Norn Chest #2: Also in the Auvrangar Wetlands of Svartalfheim. After turning the second wheel and sailing further down the river in the boat, you can go through a low opening on the left-hand side. On the beach behind is the chest. To open it, you must set three dials to show the runes on the chest. But watch out for the group of enemies first. First pillar: Just past the geyser on the right. You must freeze the geyser to see the icon. the second pillar is on the other side of the cliff face of the chest. For the third pillar Use the Chaos Blades to move up the hill to the left of the chest and you’ll see the pillar on a ledge. Reward: horn with blood mead
Norn Chest #3: At Radvinn’s machine in Svartalheim. the first rune is located on the ground to the immediate left of the chest. You have to light them with the Chaos Blades (press R2). For Rune number 2 you carry yourself up the hill of the machine with the Chaos Blades. Look in the direction you came from. In a fence lattice on the left is the rune. Throw the Leviathan Ax at the Red Explosive Container to set it on fire. Third Rune: On the back of the machine. Shoot a sonic arrow at the glowing green ores to reveal the rune. Reward: Idunn apple.
Norn Chest #4: At the Jarnsmida Open Pit, right after the water channel freezes when you are in the Open Pit. the first rune is directly to the left of the chest. You must light them with the Chaos Blades. Second rune: Jump down the ledge on the left and you’ll see a rune on the water wheel, but you’ll ignite it last. First get your ax back so that the crane lifts the crate again and you can now swing to the other side of the chasm to ignite the rune there. Then you swing back and freeze the water channel again, so you now also the last rune can ignite on the water wheel. Reward: horn with blood mead
alfheim
Norn Chest #5: In the area “Der Strönd”. Follow the path with Tyr and Atreus after fighting the Elves of Light for the first time. Right in front of the temple gate. You will come to a rune chest. It is not yet feasible on the first visit because the right tools are missing. So you have to come back later.
Norn Chest #6: In the Temple of Light. After knocking over the large Alb Statue with Kratos to make the Light Bridge appear, you will come to the area with the next Rune Chest. You have to hit the three bells with the runes within the time limit. the first bell is directly to the left of the chest. The second bell is on the gallery a little further up the stairs. the third bell is in the passage to the right of the chest. You must first uncover them with one of Atreus’ sonic arrows and then you can hit them with the ax by bouncing it off the Dawnstone. Reward: Idunn apple.
Norn Chest #7: In the north of the wasteland of Alfheim. The chest is located by a building that has red tendrils running through it, which must first be removed with the Leviathan Axe. First rune: On the south side of the small tower right by the chest. You must light the torch with the Chaos Blades. Second rune: On the north side of the tower/building. Also ignite with Chaos Blades. Third rune: It’s on the roof. Hit the red vase next to the rune with the ax to make it explode and ignite the rune. Reward. horn with blood mead
Norn Chest #8: As part of the side quest “Secret of the Sands”. After reaching the depths of the wasteland and completing the zip line, you must pull yourself up to various anchor points on stone pillars. This will take you over an abyss to other catacombs, which are secured with round doors made of wooden branches. The chest is located outside of the catacombs, on the lower side of a ledge. First bell: For this you have to climb up the ledge again with the Chaos Blades and into the upper entrance of the catacombs. The bell is by the window. Second bell: Right by the chest. Third bell: Also in close proximity to the chest. You have to open the wooden branch door to get to it. You can only make the time limit if you have previously opened the passages. Vanaheim
Norn Chest #9: In the southern wilderness of Vanaheim. Once you have passed the abandoned village, continue along the path and defeat the group of enemies. Then you will come directly to the chest of the Norns. It’s right on the way and you can’t miss it. You have to set the right rune on each of the three pillars with rotating mechanisms, which can also be read on the chest. First pillar: Look to the right from the chest and you will see the pillar on a small grassy knoll. You must first uncover them with the Chaos Blades. Second pillar: Stand in front of the chest and face left. The pillar is further up on a ledge. Third pillar: When you stand by the chest, you have to go back a bit the way you came. You will be able to see the pillar on the left of the path on an elevated position. You must first remove the undergrowth with the Chaos Blades before you can hit the pillar with the axe. Reward: horn with blood mead
Norn Chest #10: At the abandoned village. At the destroyed bridge with the rotating crane. You must light the torches. First Torch: On the cliff edge you came from. Swing the burning bucket on the crane so that you can ignite the torch. Second Torch: Now turn the crane anti-clockwise again so that you can jump over the swamp to the small area on the left and turn the crane again so that you can use it to light the torch on the big tree. For the third torch you have to swing over the swamp to the other destroyed end of the bridge and then run down the small path on the right to the swamp bank. There you can ignite the third torch with the Chaos Blades. You will also find the chest in the same place. Reward: Idunn apple.
Midgard
Norn Chest #11: By the Banks of the Nine. At the large cliff that you have to climb north-west of the bank of the Nine to reach the Norns. The chest is at the bottom of the cliff. Torch 1: Also at the foot of the climbing wall, right next to the ascent point. Torch 2: Use the Chaos Blades to climb all the way to the top where the ice wall is about to be destroyed. The torch is to the left of this ice wall. Torch 3: If you look in the direction from which you came with the wolf sled, you will notice that you can use the Chaos Blades to slide down the climbing wall to a middle level, do this and you will reach the last torch, then you can get another one let it slide down to get back to the chest. Reward: Horn with blood mead.
