Sackboy A Big Adventure: That’s how good the PC version review is

Sackboy: A Big Adventure on PC: This is how the port plays on the computer (4)

Since the end of October, the Little Big Planet spin-off Sackboy: A Big Adventure is no longer a PS5 and PS4 exclusive, but is also available for the PC. The game is available on both Steam and the Epic Games Store. Sony wants a whopping EUR 59.99 for the port of the two-year-old title, but also promises some small technical improvements for the PC version. A higher frame rate should be possible and, above all, the lighting on correspondingly powerful devices should benefit from the computer’s performance. We’ve played the PC version extensively and think it’s done pretty well. If you turn the graphics options up to the limit, the optics are actually slightly fancier than the PS5 version, but strong hardware is also required for this. Above all, the different surfaces made of fabric, wood or various metals appear a bit more realistic on the PC due to more dynamic reflections and lighting.

A look at the options kit

Frills like so-called shadow ray tracing may sound noble, but ultimately have no groundbreaking effect. Most shadows look exactly the same with or without the option. Only some objects cast more believable shadows with ray tracing enabled.

If you don’t have a high-end graphics card, you should weigh up whether one or the other flourish is worth the loss in frame rate. Fortunately, we can see directly in the graphics options how the settings affect the current display.

The paused game continues to be displayed in the background and directly shows us the effect of the changes made. In addition, a window at the edge of the screen informs us about the effects of optical fine-tuning on performance.

As for the frame rate, Sackboy runs at either a 60 or 120 frames per second limit, or unlimited. In the cutscenes, there are still occasional image stutters in all variants, but the bottom line is that the game runs smoothly.

The PC options are generally neatly organized and presented. In addition to the classic graphics, audio and control adjustments, there are also useful settings for accessibility and quality of life. For example, different modes are available for color blind people and the ability to customize the in-game font.

If you use a Playstation controller, you can optionally activate gamepad sound effects and Sixaxis control. However, this does not affect the basic gameplay.

Every (new) beginning is difficult

One option that we would have really liked for the PC version, however, is the ability to create another save. Because the game is primarily aimed at families, the creation of different profiles or scores should actually be a matter of course. In Sackboy: A Big Adventure (buy now €62.99 ) but even starting a new game is not that easy. In order to be able to start all over again, we actually have to manually remove the written data from our system. We must not forget to disable Steam’s cloud saves. Basic functions that were already available on the Super Nintendo shouldn’t be such a hassle on current systems.

All in all, Sackboy: A New Adventure is still a solid port. If you have installed the necessary innards in your PC, you can even make the game world look really nice. There is no different or additional game content compared to the PS5 version. Our rating remains identical to that of the original.
