Twitter Chaos: Verified fake accounts from Nintendo, Rockstar, Valve and others confuse users

Who would have thought that Twitter’s new verification system, dreamed up by Elon “The Brain” Musk, wouldn’t turn out to be so well thought out?

At least numerous fake accounts, which supposedly come from companies like Nintendo, Rockstar Games, Valve and Co., including a blue verification check mark, are currently springing up.

Mario would never do that

A verified “Nintendo of America” account published a picture of Mario showing everyone the middle finger.

The corresponding account is still active, although the post and verification have disappeared.

A supposedly official Rockstar Games account promised an official presentation of GTA 6 for next week. And a supposed Valve account announced Ricochet: Neon Prime as the company’s “next competitive platform.”

Elsewhere, an allegedly official Twitch account promised changes to the much-discussed subscription model. The post is still online, maybe because the account is marked as a parody account in the bio?

Given that, I guess it’s fair to say that things are a bit chaotic on Twitter these days. Yesterday, a second “Official” tag for accounts that are sure to be real was introduced, but was removed hours later.

“Please note that Twitter will be doing a lot of stupid things in the coming months,” Musk wrote. “We will keep what works and change what doesn’t work.”

First of all, however, you should exercise caution with what you read on Twitter. Better to take a second or third look.
