Avatar 2: Flop would prevent parts 4 and 5 according to James Cameron
It’s been more than ten years since Avatar: Departure for Pandora was released, but in the meantime even films up to and including Avatar 5 are said to be in the works. Avatar 2 will be released on December 14, 2022. According to director James Cameron, the success of the film also determines how many sequels there will be.
Avatar 2: The Way of Water will be released in cinemas on December 14, 2022 – so only one month separates us from the sequel to Pandora! For many years, this was even the most successful film of all time, which now also raises the question: Will the sequel be able to build on the success? Acclaimed director James Cameron (Titanic, Terminator, Aliens, Avatar) points out that the film landscape today looks different than it did in 2009. This also ensures that the release for the planned Avatar parts 4 and 5 is no longer set in stone.

In an interview with totally movie (via dexterto) James Cameron spoke about the future of the film series. It became clear that the announced parts 4 and 5 are not as safe as some previously thought. “The market could be telling us we’re done in three months, or we could be halfway through, which means, ‘okay, let’s wrap up the story within film three and not go on forever’ when it’s just not profitable. ” Two crucial things are different today than in the days of Avatar: Departure for Pandora: “It’s the double whammy – the pandemic and streaming.”

Avatar 2 as a shining example of the allure of cinema?
However, Cameron also sees potential for Avatar 2 to be a sort of reminder of what cinema used to be. “Maybe we’ll remind people what it means to go to the movies. This film definitely does that. The question is: how many people care now?” In an interview with Entertainment Weekly Cameron also emphasized that big, expensive films need to make correspondingly large amounts of money: “We’re in a new post-COVID world, post-streaming. Maybe we will [Einspielergebnisse] never see again. Who knows? It’s all one big dice game.” Recently, Cameron also admitted that he would not necessarily direct parts 4 and 5.
