Embracer Group Shuts Down Months After Buying Square Enix Montreal (1)

The Embracer Group, previously unknown to many gamers, has blossomed into an influential player in the video game industry over the past few years. The Swedish media group based in Karlstad was able to cause a stir with dozens of acquisitions of small and medium-sized game developers and publishers, most recently with Square Enix, the makers of Tomb Raider and Deus Ex. Numerous other studios and large brands now also belong to the Swedes, such as the “Lord of the Rings” license. In its new quarterly report, Embracer announced that it plans to release a total of 234 new PC and console games by March 2026, including 25 AAA games.

Who is Embracer Group?

If you look at the news about the company on our website, it quickly becomes apparent that Embracer is almost always about acquiring small and large game developers and publishers. Just a few months ago, for example, the Swedish media group bought a large part of Square Enix, which is known for Tomb Raider and Deus Ex.

Gearbox, the makers of Borderlands and THQ Nordic, known for Biomutant and Darksiders, among other things, now also belong to the Swedish parent company. But Embracer isn’t just limited to video games, the company is pursuing a cross-media strategy that also includes films, TV series, comics and much more.

It was not until August that the news caused a stir that the company had bought many of the rights to “Lord of the Rings”. And there are also big plans for a cooperation with Marvel. It should also be an important part of the corporate strategy to finance primarily small and medium-sized game projects and to bring back old brands.

What games could we expect by 2026?

In the latest financial report, Embracer announced that they intend to release 234 new PC and console games by March 2026, in just over three years. Of these 234 games, 25 are said to have a real triple-A budget, i.e. big brands with a lot of advertising budget and potentially millions of players.

There is already some information about the planned games. Of course, not all of the 234 games are known by name, but there are already some announcements and speculations. The next big AAA game from Embracer should be Dead Island 2, which was only presented at Gamescom this year and was recently postponed again.

Other projects are likely to be the remake of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and a new Tomb Raider that has been simmering in the rumor mill for quite some time. It is also believed that Eidos Montreal is working on a new game in the Deus Ex series while the developers at 4A Games are working on a new installment in the Metro series.
