Sony on PS6 release: Probably not before 2027

Sony doesn’t expect the PlayStation 6 to appear until 2027. This emerges from a confidential document that Sony has in relation to the planned acquisition of Activision blizzard written by Microsoft. The PlayStation maker believes this acquisition would hurt its business and the upcoming PS6.

In a response to the British competition authority CMA (Competition and Markets Authority), which is currently dealing with Microsoft’s planned acquisition of Activision Blizzard, Sony refers to its next generation of consoles. The confidential document, parts of which were published on Twitter on Wednesday, states that Sony is planning the PS6 release – for 2027 or later. The product life cycle of the PlayStation 5 would be at least seven years.

Sony fears damage to the PS6 from the “CoD” omission

Although the document does not directly state the period for the release of the PlayStation 6 – the relevant passage in the text has been censored – another argument suggests that the next generation of consoles is not to be expected anytime soon. This is how Sony writes out loud Eurogamer in the document that in the event of a takeover, the “Call of Duty” franchise would be eliminated by 2027. By the time the new generation of consoles were launched, access to “CoD” and other Activision titles would already be lost.

In this case, Sony fears a severe restriction in competitiveness and assumes that many gamers would switch to other consoles. However, Microsoft has already promised to offer “Call of Duty” for Sony platforms as long as there is a PlayStation console.

Long live the PS5

It will probably only become clear in 2027 or later whether this will be adhered to. If the PS6 is released in this period, the product life cycle of the PS5 will be as long as or longer than that of the PS4. The PlayStation 4 was released in November 2013 and was replaced by the PS5 seven years later. However, the console is still supported today.
