The Witcher 3 Next-Gen Update: Hated armor from the Netflix series comes into play

from Oliver Jaeger
The new next-gen update for The WItcher 3 not only brings ray tracing features and an Ultra Plus graphics mode into play, but also content from the Netflix series. This includes, for example, the armor of the Nilfgaardian soldiers, which has a design that takes some getting used to and was probably not very popular with the community.

As an early Christmas present for fans of The Witcher franchise, CD Projekt RED is sending out a next-gen update on December 14th. The free update then comes, for example, with ray tracing, an Ultra Plus graphics mode, a camera mode and the integration of various upscaling technologies. Another key point mentioned by CDPR is the inclusion of several pieces of content from the Netflix series.

Nilfgaard’s Crumple Armor from the series in the next-gen update

This might worry some The Witcher fans, as CD Projekt RED decided to pack the Nilfgaardian soldiers’ armor from the first season of the Netflix adaptation into the next-gen update. The design of this armor was very controversial and probably hated by many fans because it looks very crumpled. Some are said to have even referred to this armor as a “ballsack”.

In 2020 producer Lauren Schmidt Hissrich told IGNthat this design, which takes some getting used to, was explicitly chosen in order to be able to clearly distinguish the armor of the Nilfgaard soldiers from that of the Cintra soldiers. It wasn’t meant to be the standard design of ordinary armor, which the Netflix team managed to do. However, since the armor’s design was widely poked fun at in the episode, the production team reportedly decided to change the design over the coming seasons to make the armor look less wrinkled and unaesthetic.

Undeterred, CD Projekt RED is bringing the Crumpled Nilfgaard Armor to The Witcher 3 as part of the next-gen update . A quest is also waiting for the players, which you could see briefly in the live stream. As for the Netflix series, it has recently been revealed that Henry Cavill will no longer be appearing as Geralt in the fourth season. Liam Hemsworth is taking on that role.
