Geforce RTX 2060 and GTX 1660: Nvidia finally puts an end to it

from Oliver Jaeger
According to reports from the Chinese website ITHome, Nvidia will now officially end production of its popular Geforce RTX 2060 and GTX 1660 series. These models are popular GPUs among budget gamers because of their price-performance ratio and their good availability.

A few weeks ago it was clear that Nvidia would stop producing the Geforce RTX 2060 and its other editions. ITHome from China has now confirmed that the manufacturer will also shut down the Geforce GTX 1660 series. This affects the models Geforce RTX 2060 with 6 and 12 GiB and the Geforce RTX 2060 Super, as well as the Geforce GTX 1660, Super and Ti.

Geforce RTX 2060 and GTX 1660 – Good and cheap

The graphics cards of the 2060 and 1660 series are very popular with budget gamers because they offer excellent value for money thanks to their low cost. Also, the cards are readily available, which has further improved with the demise of the crypto boom. So there will be used GPUs from the 2060 and 1660 series for a long time, so that Nvidia does not need to replenish stocks and can stop production.

What do we think about GPU prices? Price development of the generations

In the latest hardware and software survey on Steam the Geforce RTX 2060 currently ranks second with a 6.1 percent share of Steam users. The Geforce GTX 1660 is also good with 2.74 percent (1660 Super with 2.34 percent), only surpassed by two Ampere GPUs (RTX 3060 and 3070).

In 2019, Nvidia launched the Geforce RTX 2060 and GTX 1660 based on the Turing architecture. Compared to the Pascal-era GTX 1060 GPU, the transistor count of the RTX 2060 has increased from 4.4 to 10.8 billion. The later released RTX 2060 Super was then 15 percent more powerful than the original. The Geforce GTX 1660, on the other hand, appeared with 6 GiB memory and 1,408 FP32 ALUs and can be overclocked beyond 1.8 GHz. The super model of the GTX 1660 then appeared with 20 percent more power.

Whether there will be similar graphics cards from Nvidia in the future that are as attractive as the Geforce RTX 2060 and Geforce GTX 1660, only the future can tell. The current Ada Lovelace generation, which has so far produced two models with the Geforce RTX 4090 and 4080, is not yet convincing in terms of price.
