Stray as a Game Boy game: Demake video almost makes me think I played it back then

Stray lets me become a velvet paw on the PS5. I find the atmospheric cyberpunk city to which the game sends me really chic. It shows up pretty well on the Current Gen console. The question of how the adventure would have played out on the Game Boy didn’t even cross my mind. However, I’ve now seen a fan video showing a very short demake version of the game – and it’s as familiar to me as if I played it as a kid; although this version never existed.

Demake video looks very authentic

The YouTube channel 64 Bits has already published some demakes and now shows in about three minutes what Stray could have looked like 30 years ago. In the video description I read:

It’s 1992 and Stray just came out for the original Game Boy!

The special thing about the video is that it not only shows exemplary scenes from a demake version, but also a fictional cover for the game that looks sweet as candy. I could well imagine it in my collection at the time.

Here’s what to see: The video includes an intro scene roughly the same as the original game, three different parts of a level, and a level completion screen. The characteristic elements of the cat adventure are immediately recognizable: for example, how the stray finds its way through the city and small loopholes or how it is chased by zurks. Drone B-12 and the music robot Morusque have also found their place.

For comparison, you can watch the trailer for the “real” Stray again here:

The side scrolling level feels like an authentic Game Boy game to me right away. This impression is not only due to the graphics, but above all to the sound and music backdrop. I especially like the sound for jumping.

The version of Morusque’s song at the end of the level is really good too. As I said, the whole thing immediately triggers a false déjà vu in me; probably because I played titles with animal protagonists like The Lion King and A Dog Named Beethoven on the Game Boy back then.

Samara Summer

Samara has been gambling since the 90s. Her first console of her own was the original Game Boy, and she got the games for it at the used electronics store around the corner. Since then, the author has remained true to gambling. After her second console, the SNES, she eventually switched to PC and PS1. Other consoles from Sony and Microsoft followed in the next few years.

However, as inspirations, the video description gives other games than the ones that immediately came to mind; namely the Game Boy ports of Oddworld Adventures, Prince of Persia and Alley Cat for DOS. Anyway, I think it’s a shame that there isn’t really a complete demake of Stray, because I would play it immediately – but not on the original Game Boy, because unfortunately I don’t have it anymore.

Does the video make you feel nostalgic too and would you like to play the Game Boy game if it really existed?
