Geforce RTX 4090: Only 8% less power with 50% less TBP?
Properly controlled, the Geforce RTX 4090 can consume significantly less power and hardly lose any performance. Quasar Zone took a closer look at the topic and reports its results.
Only 8 percent less power with 50 percent less TBP? Sounds good for Geforce RTX 4090 owners, given rising electricity prices. The Quasar Zone website looked at this explicitly in a test and came to the conclusion – probably not entirely surprising – that the last few percent of performance are disproportionately expensive.
In general, the Geforce RTX 4090 works relatively efficiently. It’s just a fast graphics card and the next smaller model already has a considerable gap in terms of arithmetic units and, in the end, the performance achieved. But if you can do without a few percent of performance, which is often the case, you can save significant maintenance costs.

Measured in Cyberpunk 2077, Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered, Forza Horizon 5, Lost Ark and PUBG: Battlegrounds. All games were measured in 4K UHD and maximum settings. If you want the whole story, watch it quasar zone pure; the summary is that power limits hardly cost a frame rate, but save a significant amount of performance. Those who bother with undervolting can achieve even slightly better results. Stable underclocking of a Geforce RTX 4090 is a bit more complex than simply setting a power limit, as you have to work your way along the voltage curve. Either way, you can quickly and even save over 100 watts of power consumption and, in the worst case, lose 8 percent of your performance. That should be a reasonable scenario for many.
