I was never able to do anything with Warzone, but thanks to DMZ I now spend many hours in CoD

MeinMMO author Dariusz Müller is a big shooter fan, but he was never able to do anything with Warzone and other Battle Royale. Thanks to the new DMZ mode, he now spends hours in Call of Duty: Warzone 2.

With Call of Duty: Warzone, Activision 2020 launched an extremely successful battle royale shooter that found many fans – but I could never become friends with the popular title. Neither with Apex Legends, PUBG or Fortnite.

To say I hate battle royale shooters would be an exaggeration. I’m just not a fan of the genre and don’t enjoy playing it.

Various aspects of a battle royale shooter bother me. This includes starting each round without armament, the zone getting smaller and smaller and pushing me to certain points on the map, and that the course of the round also depends on luck or bad luck when looting. Also, I’m missing a permanent progression that is more than just reaching a certain rank.

Nevertheless, Warzone 2 is currently giving me a lot of pleasure. Almost two weeks after the release, I’ve already spent almost 30 hours in the new shooter. That’s impressive considering I’m a huge Pokémon fan and Crimson and Crimson released around the same time frame.

CoD explores a new genre and becomes an MMO for me

With Warzone 2, CoD ventured into a new genre, the so-called extraction shooters. This genre is best known for games like Escape from Tarkov and Hunt: Showdown. These are shooters in which I go armed into an area full of dangers, collect tons of loot, complete missions and then leave the map at an extraction point.

Even if the gameplay might remind you of a battle royal shooter, it plays very differently. For example, I go into a round armed and don’t have to look for my loadout first. The looting itself is then mainly there to fulfill the missions or to improve your own equipment.

Unlike a battle royale, in extraction shooters I have continuous progression. I don’t start from scratch round by round, but rather work towards a long-term goal. DMZ feels like an MMO to me because of this, including looting and leveling.

3 mistakes in CoD Warzone 2 that you should definitely avoid

Every lap is exciting

The big goal of me and my teammates is to get a second place for the so-called insured weapon – a weapon that you always get back when you die. All other weapons and items will be lost if you suffer a death in DMZ mode.

In order to get a second insured weapon, I roam the Al-Mazrah map with my allies and complete various assignments. We fight against AI soldiers and enemy players, always with our goal in mind.

On top of that, our constant companion on the missions is the risk of losing the equipment and all the items that we need to complete our task. There is always a certain tension in the air. Someone could be lurking anywhere, targeting our inventory.

This reminds me of another genre I really enjoy: survival games. I’ve spent thousands of hours in ARK: Survival Evolved and while I can’t expect any dinos in Warzone 2, I’ll think twice about straying too far from my teammates and throwing myself into a battle alone.

Without DMZ, I would never have played Warzone 2

I’m pretty sure I won’t be a fan of battle royale shooters in the future either. The lack of armament at the beginning of a round, necessary luck when looting, and the ever-shrinking zone you have to stay in are just some of the gameplay aspects that I don’t like.

While there are parallels between the modes, I find Extraction Shooter to be a completely different experience and I really enjoy Call of Duty’s DMZ mode.

There are still a few corners here and there where there is room for improvement, but one thing I can already say with a pretty good deal of certainty: If it weren’t for the DMZ mode, I probably wouldn’t have downloaded Warzone 2.

If you want to test the mode soon, please have a look around here on MeinMMO before the first round. We have some guides for DMZ mode as well as 10 tips I wish I knew earlier.
