The Settlers: New release date, new name, but old problems

The Settlers: New developer update again causes horror among fans

from Thilo Bayer
Ubisoft really pulls it off: a developer video announces the release date of the controversial reboot of The Settlers. Will a new name and console versions really help?

For months, PCGH has been reporting on the broken relationship between the settler community and the developers. The situation got worse with almost every developer update, and fans were appalled at almost every design change. So now it’s time for release again.

New name, old problems

On February 17th, 2023, The Settlers will appear under the name “New Alliances” from 60 euros, like the Epic Games Store reveals. Ubisoft itself announces the new release date only via developer video. This was preceded by several attempts by Ubisoft since 2018 to relaunch The Settlers in a contemporary way. In the more than four years, many design decisions have been overturned, well-known developers have left the project and the last attempt to bring the game to the market caused a scathing reaction from the fans.

So it was a good year again in isolation, but the fan reactions so far left little room for hope that Ubisoft will be reconciled with the community. The fact that the once legendary development game is now appearing in this form should again cause displeasure – and the announced later implementation for consoles could cause resentment again. For the fans, the new settler game has long since strayed far too far from the original concept towards RTS. The comments on the YouTube video are corresponding: “It’s an RTS for people who don’t like RTS, it’s a colony simulator for people who don’t like colony simulators, it’s city building for people who don’t like city building, it’s resource management chains for people who don’t like resource management chains,” wrote one commenter.

The introduction in the video, which many fans may interpret as satire, also shows how far Ubisoft has strayed from the fan base: “First of all, we would like to thank all of you, our players and fans. All the feedback and requests for improvement that we received help us to create a better The Settlers game together”.
