Additional functions for headphones: Bose is considering paid subscriptions

from Oliver Jaeger
In an interview that the tech portal The Verge conducted with the CEO of Bose, the question was, among other things, whether the successful audio company is considering offering paid subscriptions for additional functions in its products. The answer to this is that one is not yet sure and it is a test and learning situation.

Is audio product manufacturer Bose following the same path as BMW with its heated seats and offering a paid subscription for additional headphone functions? That could definitely be the case in the future for the soon to be 60-year-old successful company. The question of a subscription model for certain headphone functions came up in an interview between Bose CEO Lila Snyder and the tech portal The Verge.

Additional features via paid subscriptions? – Conceivable for Bose

It was specifically about “subscription headphones”, for which such a payment model could be worthwhile with increasing software and capabilities, especially in the AI area. In the headphone segment, such paid subscriptions would at least be a new field to be developed. Lila Snyder explains that Bose has many ideas for new features that are thought about and tested.

The Bose CEO is addressing the automotive industry, where these types of functions already exist. These should by no means appeal to everyone, or rather not everyone should want to take advantage of them. In the case of headphones, such functions could then be brought to the customer via over-the-air updates. BMW, for example, offers seat heating in its vehicles, which can be used with a paid subscription of 180 euros per year.

Lila Snyder is not yet able to answer the question of whether Bose will introduce a payment model for its features. Such experiments have not yet been carried out at Bose. In addition, such subscription models must always have a benefit for the customer. Ultimately, this is a test and learning situation, because as Lila Snyder reveals in the interview: “Sometimes the things that you imagine will add value and that customers really want to pay more for don’t turn out to be out the things you imagine. Other things you never thought of might turn out to be such.” In any case, the company still has a long way to go to get the right nose for it.

Bose was founded in 1964 in the USA as a manufacturer of audio products by Amar G. Bose and rose to prominence in the 1980s with its wave radio. In addition to headphones and headsets, the company also produces sound systems for Honda, Hyundai, Porsche and other car brands.
