Steam heavyweights among themselves: Darktide beats Callisto Protocol, NfS Unbound and Midnight Suns

The launch of Warhammer 40K Darktide has been much better received by players than competing releases like The Callisto Protocol, Need for Speed Unbound or Marvel’s Midnight Suns – at least if you want to believe the SteamDB player numbers.

With The Callisto Protocol, Need for Speed Unbound and Marvel’s Midnight Suns, PC gamers have been delighted with some well-known releases in the last few days. However, a recently released game is enthroned above all – and at least in one aspect by a clear margin: Warhammer 40K Darktide, which was released on November 30th, can leave all the competition far behind, according to the unofficial Steam database SteamDB.

In concrete terms, this can be seen from the current number of players. Shortly after the release, more than 100,000 Steam players were said to be playing Warhammer 40K Darktide at the same time, although the numbers have fallen slightly since then. The other three titles don’t even come close to this amount, even if you add the all-time high in the number of players: While The Callisto Protocol was able to record up to 18,000 gamers at the same time, Need for Speed Unbound and Marvel’s Midnight Suns have an internal record of each about 11,000 players still further in the shadow of the Warhammer offshoot.

However, a different picture emerges from the Steam reviews, although there is still room for improvement for all games. Here, Need for Speed Unbound is clearly ahead and can look back on 83 percent positive feedback from a good 29,000 reviews. Warhammer 40K Darktide, on the other hand, has 70 percent positive reviews, while Marvel’s Midnight Suns has 63 percent positive reviews.

The Callisto Protocol got off to a dramatically bad start in the meantime: Shortly after the release, the horror game was punished with just 27 percent positive ratings – according to the reviewers, only the performance problems at the launch were scary. The recently released patch, which aims to fix the stuttering in the PC version, seems to lead the trend upwards. Since the update was there, The Callisto Protocol has now climbed to 45 percent positive Steam reviews, but there is still a long way to go before a successful start.
