200 developers are working on Zenimax’s new AAA project
Ben Jones, creative director at Zenimax Online Studios (The Elder Scrolls Online), revealed in a podcast interview that his team now consists of 200 developers working on a “very extensive project”. The new AAA game from Zenimax has been in development since 2018.
Since 2018 we have been reporting again and again that the creative minds of Zenimax Online Studios (The Elder Scrolls Online) are working on a AAA game. A new engine is used for the project, and the game is said to be set in a previously unknown universe. It also seems clear that we are dealing with an open world and that we can probably control the character from the first and third person perspective.
Update from the creative boss
At the “Product Builder’s Podcast” was Ben Jones’ guest in November. The Zenimax creative director works with his team on the aforementioned AAA game and revealed new details (via Massivelyop). Jones speaks of an enormously extensive project, which represents a considerable investment for Zenimax and on which 200 developers, who are scattered all over the world, are currently working.
About 50 developers belong to the important design team. More than 100 developers are working on the game from their home office using remote tools. Like Zenimax President Matt Firor, Ben Jones has so far avoided the MMO term. So it is still unclear to which genre the new work will belong. However, we can now at least say that the project is not only being worked on, Zenimax is also mobilizing a large team to implement the game.
By the way: The Elder Scrolls Online was about seven years in development. The official announcement was in 2012, about two years before the launch. So maybe we can expect an official announcement as early as next year. However, it could still be quite a while before the final release.
