A few details can be gleaned from a preview of the next-gen update for The Witcher 3. We explain why Roach can now walk backwards.

The witcher 3 next-gen update salami tactics continue. After PCGH just yesterday reported more details like FSR and integrated mods, the website Eurogamer got more details.

Lots of detail tuning for Geralt and Roach

In conversation with Philip Weber from CD Projekt Red, further and previously unknown details come to light. CDPR obviously had fun making small changes, because the update on December 14th. could also be the last major one for The Witcher 3

There are several innovations in the interaction with Roach, including the possibility of running backwards with the horse if it has been standing before. And when standing in the water, roach raises his head after the update. The free update for The Witcher 3 is a kind of “final gift” for all fans who have remained loyal over the past two years. It was to be expected that the new camera would change the field of view in such a way that the frame rate would also be negatively affected. That’s why the new close-up focus is only available for PC and next-gen consoles, not for Switch or PS4/Xbox One.

Eurogamer was also allowed to use the console versions of The Witcher 3 Next Gen play in. It probably takes a while before you can clearly see the ray tracing effects. The game world then appears “deeper, warmer and softer”. The shadows are darker and longer, colors are richer and stronger and the leaves move gently in the wind. Without ray tracing, the game world would be “flatter, brighter and harder, with more perceptible edges”. Overall, the ray tracing version looks more believable, especially indoors like taverns.
